Face Unlock: 0. Picture: 1.

There are three kinds of people who lock the phone....

Those who are hiding, or trying to hide things - works just fine unless your hiding it from family or spouse

Those who do it for a little security against theft - if a thief has your picture he's trying to kill you, not steal your phone

Those who are required for work and access to exchange servers at work - not even those trace codes are sufficient, face unlock will certainly not be

Its a fun gimmick Google gave us. But think about the long term uses. The API for it will allow things like gestures for changing music like kinect for xbox. Google has a great new toy apple doesn't own, and this is the easiest way to show off the new API... I can't wait for further application of it in the near future.

I don't keep top secret stuff on my phone. Even if its stolen they wont know me most likely to have a photo or a good photo to unlock anyway. I'm sure we will see a update fix for this after launch it people keep talking about it.

.....I dont know how someone would steal your phone, not know you AND have a picture of you.... Sorry could you explain that one to me? :)

Sure, if I went to the mall and put my phone down on a counter, walked away and forgot about it. heaven forbid... Some skeezy person takes it and doesn't turn it in to lost and found. Instead they go home and set to the task of unlocking it... They don't know me, they stole it, and they don't have a picture of me to unlock it. Face unlock just became security.

EDIT: I just re read your question, you misunderstood me. When I wrote don't know me/have a picture of me the / doesn't mean and. It means or. So what I meant but was trying to shortcut was they don't know me or have a picture of me

I use unlock features on my phone to keep people out of it if i happen to lose it.. they wouldnt have some random high res pic around of me.

If you are using it to keep your girl or friends out of the phone then i'd consider it a loophole.

How is this much of an issue? Do people carry around photo's of themselves with their phones? If you leave your phone somewhere and somebody picks it up or steals it they more than likely are not going to have a picture of you.

No phone is 100% secure anyway and I don't even lock my phone. I see this as more of a convenience than a security measure anyway.

Whoever thought that this wouldn't be an issue is flat out dumb. You aren't paying for expensive $50,000 facial recognition unlock software that'll recognize what flavor chap stick you got on. You're paying for a wow factor as someone above me said. I don't know about you guys but I'll definitely be using this as it's more of a convenience than having to swipe in a pattern. Granted, I won't be able to use it at night.

It was never meant to be secure and I thought people knew that. Maybe you should find some more trustworthy friends if this is a really bug issue...

The face unlock is the same as the slide to unlock, it's not meant as a security feature like some said just a "gimmick", an "Oh cool! Look what my phone can do!". the safest lock method is pattern lock or password lock.

I just use the slide so the face is ok even if its not 100% locked.

I'll prob just use it to show off to my iPhone friend. He is upset with ios 5. And now I brag to him about how amazing ICS is going to be. But big deal, no random person will have a picture of you. Some non techies don't even know how to unlock using the slider for android.

So many problems with this Face lock i dont even see why it was included. What convenience is there when you still have to use a pin at night to unlock it? or when it fails?

Now a photo unlocks it to? So anyone with access to my facebook page might be able to unlock my phone? Thats security?

Ill stick with the 2 swipe pattern unlock ive been using for years. Quick and secure enough for me.

I dont see myself using the face unlock other then when people ask about it or want to see it.

How many of your facebook friends have access to your phone. Better yet why the hell would they take the time to steal your phone, go to your page, print the pic, just to get into your phone?

This whole debate is just dumb!! Who even carries pictures of people around anymore? And how would a real thief have a pic of you? If you are worried about your friends stealing your phone, why do you hang out with thieves? And who the hell ever said this was some full proof secure way of locking your phone?

Android's New Face Unlock Feature Fooled by a Picture

The "photograph-vs-face unlock" issue seemed to the prevailing thought when face unlock was first announced... I'm definitely interested in seeing a response to this.

Tim Bray responded to a comment about face unlock's potential insecurity by saying "Nope. Give us some credit." While I don't expect face unlock to be some high-security protection for a phone, I do think his statement could use some backing-up or clarification at this point.

Pick pick pick....who cares, like everyone has said it is not a security feature.

I don't expect any measure of guaranteed security from face unlock. I've said so more than once. I'm sharing the video for people who may be interested; it hadn't yet been posted on AC.

Definitely a gimmick and not a security feature. And no, some random thief isn't gonna have a picture of you. Your girl could go thru your phone when you're sleeping by putting the phone in front of your face, but that's about it. Lol:)

This method isnt 100% but: pull the sim and use it to call a phone with caller id. Take the name and run it through Facebook. Based on location it should be a small list. Profile pictures are public on facebook so if you have a good enough pic set for a profile pic it could possibly be used to unlock the phone.

All in theory but seems easier then trying to bypass the fingerprint scanner on my atrix

thats hilarious. hes got some janky ass friends right? i think it is cool for exactly what it is. its obviously not DARPA level pentagon security!

if you could do a time period where every so often you had to do you pin or pattern, i would probably use all of the time.
