Is the face unlock system on the Nexus a samsung thing or a ICS thing? Meaning once the Vigor gets ICS will it carry over the same features as far as face unlocking?

Face Unlock is part of Ice Cream Sandwich. Its an Android thing....well.... As long as the phone has a front facing cam I guess.

Yeah I don't see oems removing features... with exceptions. The original galaxy s had samsungs own mail app which was worse than stock. It also had a security flaw if you were rooted.

Although its neat and cool and novel and all, I wonder how many will actually use it. Seems like it would be easier/faster just to punch in a code.

OK, well that is more impressive than at the unveil.

Yeah, I do believe the dim lighting and the "make-up" may have played a role... or who knows, maybe they handed him the wrong device with someone else's face locked in, in essence showing that it did work. When it works, its blazing fast. When it doesn't... there's a pin unlock instead. Neat ideas, and we'll know in good time if a picture could unlock the phone.

That's my main question about the technology: Can it be fooled by a photograph of the person? It was my first thought when they announced the feature.

I believe Tim Bray responded on twitter about that.

Koush: The face recognition unlock thing is really easily hackable. Show it a photo.
Timbray: @koush Nope. Give us some credit.

Also, I think Engadget reported from AsiaD that Andy Rubin mentioned that the technology was from PittPatt which they acquired earlier this year and that they actually had to slow down the process because it was so quick that people didn't believe it was actually working at all.

In this thread they mention that the internals of the Nexus include facial unlock hardware, so I wonder whether this technology really works with just a front facing camera.

I was just watching an online video of the Samsung Galaxy S2 face recognition ability. It didn't show how it worked but that it had it. Is that true and if so can anyone help.

I don't think it has dedicated hardware for face unlock. I think the referenced engadget article was detailing what face unlock uses to identify you ie internals of the app not the device. That is how I read it at least
