Facebook Messenger Notification tone keeps reverting back to messenger tone instead of custom tone

[Android Central Question]

I have spent the last few days trying to fix this problem. In Android settings you can set a custom notification tone. For some reason the notification for chats and calls won't stay on the custom tone I select. It keeps reverting to the messenger ding tone. But the one for Group Chat Mentions stays on the custom tone. Any ideas on how to fix this or why it's happening? I have rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled the messenger app and have still had problems.

Which phone? Where did you get the custom tones from?
