does doing the factory reset, after updating to MM, actually improve battery life? Im debating on weather to do it.

It certainly can. I usually do a factory reset after a major software update. I usually don't restore either. You would be restoring files formatted on a different version of the OS and sometimes things can hang up. I know factory resets are a pain, but they can help a lot!

Factory reset deletes ALL your installed apps and ALL your data. A cache clear is much safer.

Use LG Backup and Restore to do a backup to the sd card first. And copy that backup to PC, MAC, thumb drive, etc just in case. It will save all sms/mms and even call lots, app settings. It's pretty painless once you get the hang of it. Doesn't take long and the only downside is possibility of user error.

I did the update and a reset and my battery life is terrible. It was amazing before the update. The update messed my phone up in so many ways... I regret ever doing it. It was running flawless until I updated
