"Failed to update firmware" from 2.3.6

Hi there,

I have recently been trying to upgrade my phone (a Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100) from 2.3.6 but can't seem to get it to work. Each time I do it says it has failed and to try Kies. When I try this it says it is not authorized. At one point it got partway through an update before failing. Now it will only connect to the computer sporadically and shows "MTP connection" even when plugged into the wall. It will also black out (and then freeze) the screen every time I make or receive a call so I have to remove the battery to restart it.
I'm not very good with technology so simple terms please.
Is there anything i can do to fix this or should I give up?

I am, using my home's wifi. My phone no longer stays connected to the computer via the USB cord to download anything unless I tape it into place.

Look at samsungupdates.com.
That has stock ROM files that can be flashed with Odin.
Look for your exact model number, and region code, in your case, the (XXX).
