fails to charge to 100% overnight

i noticed this two nights in a row - i'd plug my phone to charge overnight and wake up to find that it's only charged up to ~85% (84% first night, 86% second night). below is a screenshot. both nights, the starting charge level was around 5%.

first night i used a 500mAh wall charger, second night i used an apple iphone 1A charger. i know some of you will say that's the reason why it didn't charge to 100%, but the Amp rating only affects how FAST it charges, not how much it charges. i have a 500mAh charger at my desk i use all the time, and it has no problem charging to 100% during the day, but my starting charge level is usually over 50% during those times.

you can see that shortly past midnight, the phone stopped charging (top green bar), and the battery charge level is obviously under 100% (2nd graph). the "device usage" is a little curious though (4th graph), i just noticed that the screen turned on at the same time the charging stopped.

at my bedside, the first one is a Plantronics bluetooth earpiece charger (500mAh), second one is an iphone charger (1000mAh). at my desk, it's an older samsung 500mAh flip phone charger i've had for years.

I am curious if the trickle charging on the Plantronics charger drops too low, or doesn't work.

Why not use the USB 3.0 that comes with it? Full charge from 0-100% in about 90 minutes.

sounds reasonable, but that doesn't explain the iphone charger doing the same thing the 2nd night. i'm draining my battery now (streaming a movie) to get to 5% so i can retest it during the day while at my desk.

If you charge your phone before you go to bed and get it to 100% and then take it off it will likely only go down a few percent. Sometimes when I drink heavily I'm not inclined to screw around with the charger flap and I just put it on UPSM LOL!!!

Give the USB 3.0 a try, it won't hurt the phone to be 100% and still on a charger for hours, batteries and phones have come a long way.

After 17 hours of moderate phone usage I'm still around 40% when I go to bed.

I think wall charger have problem but your desk charger is completely ok. Use it every where

The phone automatically goes into trickle-charge mode when hits 100%, to keep it fully charged without throwing max juice at the battery the entire time.. All modern smartphones have the same functionality.

It's safe to keep the phone plugged in all night long, regardless of how fast it initially reaches 100%.

This. Nova don't worry about it... The phone won't allow itself to overcharge so using the charger it came with is fine.. Honestly. I have no issues with my battery on my Note 3 and I've had it for awhile. .

i'm not worried about overcharging at all, i just choose to use a charger that has a lower mAh rating than the OEM charger. i appreciate the suggestions, but it doesn't help address the question of why the S5 fails to charge to 100% when using a lower amp charger.

I don't think we could answer. It is odd for sure but maybe it is doing the trickle charge sooner than it should. I still am confused as to why use a lower mAh charge if it's causing an issue.

i just noticed it today. i have the 500mAh charger next to my bed that i've always used, and keep the OEM S5 charger in the kitchen. also, besides the convenience, i don't feel the need to replace all my lower amp chargers with 2+ amp chargers. anyway, see this post and point #6: xda-developers - View Single Post - Battery Chemistry

You can use battery monitor widget to monitor the charging. A 1a charger can definitely get a full charge overnight. But there could be an issue limiting the charge of 500ma,which might not be enough to get a full charge overnight.
