I can't download my banks app because according to the bank my device needs a rear camera. Any way to fake it to download the app?

Thanks!

Would the app require the same feature if you get a hold of the .apk file? I assume you are denied downloading it from the market, so getting the .apk file could be a workaround...

So, I've just jumped ship from Apple and the iOS .. but how would I get the .apk? I also have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which has the app on it.. Could I get from there? The easy way!?

Thanks.

If you're phone is rooted, you can pull the apk.

Otherwise you'll have to try downloading from a third party site but I would be extra careful, especially if it could see your financial info. Just to be on the cautious side, there are malicious people out there that may put viruses in an apk if you don't get it from trusted sites, such as play store or Amazon.

Why's he have to be rooted? It's not a system app, he can just do an app backup with a decent file manager (es file explorer, astro) and sideload the apk.

I keep an iPod touch around for depositing checks. :-)

B of a doesn't have a check deposit feature for android

You can't access the data/app folder without having root access. Also need root for titanium backup.

OP: apk is the file format of android apps, such as exe is for windows. Sideloading means obtaining an app from another source, such as downloading from a website and installing outside the play store.

Again, I don't think he needs to be rooted to accomplish what he wants to do. All he needs is a copy of the apk and he can get that without root using a decent file manager.

You can download this apk by another device and use aplication appSaver.

I had same problem with my bank and smart pay :-)

I'd contact your bank.

They probably want access to a rear camera for some of the neater features like taking a picture of a check for image check deposit and such, but if there are features that enough non-rear-camera-equipped device owners ask for, they can specify to the Play Store that a rear camera is not required. I have several apps that have specific features that require a rear camera, but a few of the app authors have responded to user input and taken the camera requirement off the play store. Obviously the actual features that require a rear camera won't work (either the author has trapped for a "missing camera" error or the app force-closes when I try to use the camera features), but the rest of the app works fine and I just avoid the camera-enabled bits.

In the meantime, as others have said, you can probably bypass the Play Store and sideload the application if the bank will provide you with the installer (apk) for the app. The best way to do that is still to contact the bank, because hunting around for a sideloadable apk for something as important as banking seems unwise unless you can load it to another device and extract the apk yourself, or have someone you trust do it.

Telling the Nexus 7 that it has a rear camera means implementing the rear camera library and either forcing it to use the front camera or stubbing it out to always return a blank image. This is rooting/ROM territory.

Nice, didn't know they have an app to pull apk from the locked data/app. Always did it the old fashioned way with my rooted devices but never bothered to root my phone.

I'm curious as to how you do this. If you can post the steps, I'm sure the OP would like to read it too. I never had any interest in rooting my Evo 3D but that is my only device now that I can pull apk's from if I need to. The recommended app does the job but I would like to know how you do it without having to rely on the app and not having root.

I use the file manager, root explorer.

I've never used root explorer but both of the fms I mentioned (es, astro) have an "app backup" utility built in. And it definitely does not require root as I just backed up an app on a non-rooted device the other day. So here is what I would do:

1. Install es file explorer on your phone.
2. Open es and click on the button that say AppMgr.
3. Longpress your bank's app and select Backup from the context menu.
4. It will copy the apk into /sdcard/backups/apps.
5. Then you need to get the apk from your phone to your N7. I think the simplest way is to plug your phone into your computer, copy it to your computer and then plug your N7 into your computer and copy to your N7. But there are probably 50 different ways to do this step.
6. Install es on your N7.
7. To install your bank's apk, you will need to set your N7 to allow non market apps. I don't have my N7 in front of me but in gingerbread, this is in Settings/Applications/Unknown Sources.
8. Open es, navigate to where you copied the apk and click it. This should kick off the install.

[note]: Even after all this, it is still possible the app may not install to your N7 but you have nothing to lose by trying.

Thanks, might want to try out es explorer. Does not appear root explorer has that feature, it's more of a nitty gritty explorer that just dives you right into the system files (and sd card). Great for getting quick access.

It seems like a front facing camera would work just as well if the developers are competent.

lol, they are all too infatuated with iOS. I always notice that banks, companies, services etc always focus on iOS first and the android apps get left in the dust.

Such as I was talking to a directv rep the other day and all their materials print and display iOS app but nothing for android. There is an android app on the play store along with many complaints it's not functioning correctly, yet no update since August. I too would like to see them more competent.

Repeated from a previous response I made to another topic. This seems a little easier than rooting, getting an apk from another device, etc.:

To download apps marked as incompatible on Google Play, use a reputable, alternative app store. I use 1Mobile Market. Go to www.1mobile.com to download and install their app store app (ironically, the app is available on the Google Play Store, but it's marked as not compatible with the N7!). They only have free apps, including those that are listed as incompatible with the N7 on Google Play. Unlike the Play Store, 1Mobile let's you download these apps. This includes CNN, USA Today, American Express, and Discover Card.

Other reputable app stores I use are Amazon and SlideME Market.
