Faking device ID reported to carrier?

Hi guys, I'm really annoyed with T-Mobile for limiting their Data-Only plan to devices like the HTC HD2. I have a Vibrant and they won't let me use it with that plan. So I'm just wondering, is there any way to have the phone report itself as a different device to the carrier? I'm assuming it's a firmware thing ...
