[FAQ] Q & A on Rooting/ROMs/Methods

Question With factory restore

Looking to root my phone to fix the lag on the screen rotation and remove some bloatware, but my question is, if need be, if i flash my phone with odin and the factory restore back to eclair, will all the bloatware and all be back on the phone like it came out of the box (if i have to do another insurance claim due to phone being damaged), and should there be anything specific i should watch out for. I have searched and read a bunch these threads, but this is one thing i can not seem to find an answer on. thanks.

Ok, thanks. I was able to get the phone rooted. Now i am trying to find out exactly what clockwork mod is, and also how to remove the factory apk's i dont want. I found the thread on what i can remove, i just have to figure out how

ClockWorkMod is what we use to flash ROMs/kernels/themes/addons . You enter CWM by shutting down your device. Then press and hold (Volume Down+Camera+Power). Once your in CWM you navigate using your Volume Up/Down and select by pressing Camera. You can also perform complete system backup and restore in the CWM which is always recommended before doing changes to your system.

Also before you flash a ROM you need to perform a system wipe 3x.

Kernels/themes/addons do NOT require a wipe.

The thread your referring to is located here.
List: Stock Apps and their .apk files (for removal)

You install the SDK tool listed there and you can remove applications in the system.

Ok, got almost everything done that i wanted to do. Got all the bloatware off that i want to take off except for one. Media Hub will not go away. I did the sdx remover, it doenst show up on the apk file list, but its still in my applications and runs, any ideas? '

I am running the update.zip 2.2 update and the one click root non ext4

Also tried titanium backup pro version, removed it and still shows up and works!

UPDATE:
just figured it out. There was an update sitting in applications keeping the application running. When i went to settings, manage applications, i hit uninstall update, and then media hub disappeared from the list.
Now the icon was still in my applications list, i did a reboot and it was GONE.

In addition to the section Cyber Warrior posted you can also try looking at our older themes/addons from "unofficial, leaked" Froyo DK28, most which work on Froyo EB13.

Trying to root, and I can't even get my pc to recognize the phone! I downloaded 32-bit driver to my windows xp pc. Each time I connect phone by usb, I get the dreaded message "does not recognize device". What am I doing wrong?

Uninstall the driver you downloaded and try this one.

If you are still having problems, you can try uninstalling the Samsung drivers you downloaded from the link in Step 0, and download and install this driver (select "Software" at the bottom; it should say "Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.1.0)") instead

Otherwise try different cable if available, switch USB ports.. The ports on back of computer/laptop are usually the best since the are directly off the motherboard.

Turns out new USB cable did the trick. Can't believe I spent a day doing this, and something as innocuous as the cable tripped me up. Thanks for the help!

Yep a cable can make it or break it... As dumb as it sounds.. Glad you got it resolved.

Well simply put you know what Eclair has to offer.

Froyo's main features are

Flash Player 10.x
Ability to move apps to sdcard for better space management
Improved overall performance

Here is a list of other options exclusive to Froyo.

- Upgrade of the Google OS from ?clair to Froyo (2.2.1)
- Ability to install applications to external storage
- Improved Bluetooth device support
- Bluetooth Voice Dialing
- Flash Player 10.1
- GPS Enhancements
- Improved OS performance
- Email PIN based authentication
- User friendly tethering for 3G and 4G

Overall the upgrade to Froyo EB13 hasn't been to bad for most. There are some bugs but that is to be expected with any new release. Yes it is true Sammy/Sprint pulled the official OTA to fix some of the bugs which are fixable by the user.

More information on all this can be obtained in the following section.

thanks bro. another thing....i have already rooted my phone. now, im stuck in the proccess of getting clock word mod recovery to install.
i followed the instructions for doing so, and flashed the kernel needed in order to install cwm.
the problem is, when i go into rom manager to creat a backup, it tells me i need to install cwd recovery and when i try to di it a message comes up stating "an error occured while downloading your recovery." what do i do?
bt i have the eclair version

Don't use ROM Manager (for anything, actually) - boot into Clockwork to make a backup (hold vol down+camera+power while phone is off).
