Hey all,

I'm still a little new to Android and had a question regarding custom ROMs, my goal is to get my phone to either run stock android 2.1 by turning off Touchwiz or to get a custom 2.2 or 2.3 ROM for it. I like the look of stock and prefer Google search functions as opposed to Bing. I've done a lot of research and I am having trouble finding ROMs for the Fascinate with easy instructions on how to get it on. I have been able to root my phone though up to this point.

Thanks for the help.

There's an AOSP project to get stock Android 2.1 running on the Fascinate, but it's in Alpha at the moment and there are several notable things not quite working yet. You can read more about what is and what isn't working here:
[ROM] ALPHA - AOSP for Samsung Fascinate by jt1134 - Updated - xda-developers

And we don't even have a stock 2.2, so there's no way to get a 2.2, let alone 2.3, ROM working. Once Verizon/Samsung finally get a 2.2 update released, many more options will be possible.

In the mean time, you can install any 3rd party launcher that more closely resembles the stock Android launcher. ADW Laucher is popular, fast and free, and can be configured very close to the stock look and functionality.

And you'll find all the info you need on how to replace Bing with Google here:

Awesome info, thanks alot.Great info.

No problem, and remember, if, like many of us, you want to ditch TouchWiz and install ADW or any other launcher, make sure you remove the TWLauncher.apk from your system/apps directory. Even if you've set your default launcher to something else, TWLauncher will keep running in the background somewhere. You can happily leave it there, buy why?

Follow the instructions on how to debloat and include this .apk in whatever you remove. Your phone will start force closing as soon as you remove it, but just reboot and it'll be fine.

Just be sure to move your launcher of choice into the /system/app folder before removing TW, otherwise you will get a force close loop

Thanks again guys, I used to have a droid eris and I remember having the ability to turn off the Sense UI and get back to stock. I doubt that we'll ever see that ability again especially with Verizon. Maybe the Froyo update would allow this? (Wishful thinking)

if you start flashing new roms, which i highly reccomend, you will not have to worry about touch wiz at all

Technically the only ROM out that doesn't have TW incorporated into it is the alpha AOSP by jt1134 on XDA... All other ROMs are built on TW. But as mentioned before, you can remove TW in favor of another launcher
