FCC comments on broadband

The cause is greed, so the end result in removing subsidies would be that we all spend a lot more on everything...just like Europe. But they control their own destinies.

Think of it this way. If Verizon removed phone subsidies, they wouldn't lower the standard billing. We'd still pay the largest mobile bills in all of America AND pay $700 for our smartphones instead of $200 or $300.

But this would mean more money in our pocket in lower taxes so we can put the money where we want instead of where the politicians think it should go.

IF Verizon did it correctly and lowered the service rates accordingly, it would save us money. Because right now we are all paying high prices in service for highly subsidized phones whether our individual phones are highly subbed or not. We are also paying for the vzw services that we don't use. Without subsidies, these services would not exist or would be extra instead of lumped into everyone's bills. The way it is now everyone shares everyone's expenses whether we are high users or not, which is the nature of the beast.

With Verizon it is different though because we can go somewhere else if we don't like it. The fed however can spend my money on a solar plant in Ohio that I will never see a bit of benefit from yet I still have to pay for it in taxes.

Even if subsidies were eliminated here in the US, I have a highly pragmatic view that it would ever be seen as a change in how much we pay in taxes. The gov't realistically would just find somewhere else to spend the money.

If I remember right, the solar plan was a bail out, I could be wrong on that, I remember it being a big news flap as the plant still when bankrupt. As was said above, the tax money used would be shifted, we have no control over where or how the feds use the tax revenue, its part of having a government, not taxes no government, no infrastructure. What we really need is for the feds to have better control over what they spend it on. But most of that is directly related to the idiots elected to office. Not the presidency mind you, it makes no difference who is in that office, the House and Senate call the shots and make the spending bills and decide who and what get subsidies. Each requests money for pet projects and other things in their state, weather it be for public use or to support a private enterprise (subsidies) and it comes from the larger tax pool that we all pay into.

Okay, I tried to not reply but I can't help myself.
Why is it that people think a subsidy makes something less expensive? It is still money and the only thing that makes it "cheap" is that the government is using its monopoly on force to take it from someone and give it to another. It is morally wrong and I am sick of people being altruistic with other peoples money.

I will try to do better next time.

If I may ask... when did the internet become infrastructure? I don't remember anybody biting the dust from the internet not working. You could even say the internet has made us dumber, not smarter as Facebook proves to me everyday. Is it nice for me to be able to get a recipe for kung pao chicken no matter where I'm at? Yep, sure is. Seriously, you guys would be amazed at how much people like it when all there cable services are off for a few days. People are cleaning, the kids play outside, they are not at all pissed about it, unless it becomes a habit, or they are old and can't move. The internet is a luxury. It's a tie for one of the least important things in my life. Do I love having it? Hell ya, but I tell you what, if I didn't get it for free, I'd be paying as little for it as I could, and if I still paid for a smart phone, it's gone from my house.

And, if I have to pay for a farmer in the middle of nowhere to get fiber piped into his house by the state of Nebraska, I'm gonna be pissed. That's just a giant middle finger from politicians who can't say no. I'll be even more pissed if I have to pay for a bum living in the middle of L.A. to get a cable modem installed in it.

I believe I read somewhere that the United Nations declared internet access to be a basic human right.

I've seem dozens of people here say that Verizon is their "only option".

Really depends on what aspect of the internet you're looking at. While civilians use it for facebook and farmville, it does serve a necessary aspect of data transfer and communication which can be considered infrastructure.
