I wish there was a third option -- I like your idea of subforums; but I feel that there are too many. It might be better if they were consolidated to a handful. For example:

Internet & Messaging and Social Networking --> Internet, messaging & social networking

Keyboards & Voice Recognition, Launchers & Widgets, System Utilities --> Utilities, Launchers & Widgets

No Pain no Gain Cory. I guess it's like Database Theory. A perfectly rationalized DB looks great in theory, but works poorly in practice.

Now can you add a "newbie" section for anyone new to post in?

That would help keep the "how do I select a live wallpaper" threads from being posted over and over in the other forums and allow a place that people new to Android can post such questions without fear of repercussions ..... ii

This also gives the mods a place they can move such posts into that if people want to help they can go there and help.
