Kind of bummed that Google would add the Pixel to its end of life page. Android updates not guaranteed past Oct 18 and security updates until Oct 19. Geez, I feel like I have a new phone and they are already planning the obituary. I guess I should calm down, even though Apple usually gets 4 years of updates. We DID pay a premium price for this phone. The main reason I am not crazy is because I seldom keep a phone over a year!!

I think with Android, most people that care about keeping the most up to date software don't keep their phones longer than 1 or 2 years. Plus, there are way more Android options that are continually released compared to just 2 iPhone lines, standard and plus. Fewer options means you need to support them longer.

Aside from that, most phones I've had eventually get bogged down by updates that inevitably need better specs than offered in a 3 year old phone. I think 2 full years of updates at a priority over other phones is plenty. The phone will still be plenty usable even without getting Android Q or whatever it'll be by then.

I haven't read the official statement, however if they are talking about October 18, 2017 then that is just one year from initial release.

I mean, seriously, they've got to be kidding!

True, I tend to change phones every year and may very likely go with the Pixel 2 when it is released. However, ending support for the Pixel XL reduces its value in the resale market. Also, I have had my XL since nearly Day One; what about people who purchased the phone more recently? Truly unfair...

Two years from release is October 2018 for platform updates, 3 years is October 2019 for security patches

many people just see a news and make up things like this thread.
This is know for a while that google gives 2 years support and 3 year security update.
nothing have changes. all they did was added the device to their support page with a date.

its not oct 2017, its oct 2018 for update and until oct 2019 for security

untill oct 2019 u will be on the latest version of the software

Right, we've known this for a long time, it just didn't have the month and year on it, but it was obvious.

Sure, Apple has released updates for older hardware, but I've seen multiple times where an update really slowed a device down. Plus there are multiple features that new versions have that are not supported on a device. It then becomes little more than a security update.

It's never nice to hear about the 'EOL' for a device, especially when it's almost brand new. But its actually pretty good compared to other OEMs and standard length of time for Google devices.

The Pixel launched with Android 'N' , its got 'O' in beta right now, and will at least get 'P' beta before the updates might end. Even if it does end there, they will still get security updates well into Android 'P' 😃

so, you could keep the Pixel for 4 years before you might feel a little 'out dated' that's pretty good value.

Honestly I'm torn on this. I've been enjoying Android for a few months the now, coming from an iPhone. However I have to say it's pretty ridiculous that an iPhone 6 is getting updates well past the time frame androids get an EOL notice. It's not just a security update for the iPhone either. There are a lot of UI changes and things added that don't require 3d touch, which is what a previous user is referring to about missing features.

I would be very surprised if the iPhone 6 gets the 2018 version of iOS. That would be 4 years of updates. If it does get an update, it won't be the full one.

Don't worry, all of the data and telemerty they snatched from every pixel user will be used to create the hivemind for the next few Google mobile devices... Just kidding around, Google is probably making their next mobile device right now, and plan on releasing it soon.

This is their current standard policy.

2 years platform updates and 3 years security is plenty fine for me. I only keep phones for 2 years anyways.
