As I understand it, if you upgrade at all you will loose unlimited data. Yes, even if you buy a used phone and upgrade that way. The only two ways not to loose unlimited data are,...... 1 never upgrade, and or 2 buy phone at full price. Verizon knows that if they allow folks to buy used and still keep unlimited data, their phone sales will go down, due to used sales going up.
As for data, I use anywhere from 5-7 gigs a month. I do not tether. I am always using Internet on my phone.. My data would go from 30 bucks a month to about 50-60 bucks a month for the same amount of data. Crazy

As far as used phones, you are incorrect. You have to remember that a contract works both ways. The contract you signed is for the service, not the device. Verizon cannot change your contract if you simply swap your SIM card between the devices. The reason they can kill your unlimited data when you upgrade at the subsidized price is that you are signing a new contract. They are not actually changing your previous contract, but offering you a new one with the new device.
Buying either a phone at full retail or used does not touch your contract, and thus the reason you can keep your data. Just remember that Verizon at any time could tell people going month to month that they were no longer going to be allowed to use the service without a 2 year contract, thus forcing them to go to a tiered contract. I foresee this happening at some point.
