Figuring out lag....

So, recently, my phone has become reallllllllyyyyyy laggggyy. For example, I will be typing and the keyboard (google keyboard, for those interested) will register my tap as a long press, and insert some punctuation instead of a letter.

My question is - are there any apps that anyone can recommend that help narrow down what is running on the phone so I can try to figure out what is making the phone lag??

Thanks!

Same thing happens from me time to time. I just reboot and it's fine but I still feel it shouldn't ever happen. I'm pretty close to contacting their support team b/c my phone gets really hot sometimes also (116 degrees from the app I have to measure it) so I'm not sure if there's a hardware problem or not

I usually use GSAM Battery Monitor (https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ails?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm&hl=en&token=UELT1POt) to investigate app usage.

Does the lag get better after a reboot? Have you tried clearing the cache, etc? Lag can be caused by a million different things, and most all require different steps to fix.

It does tend to get better after a reboot, but I usually find myself having to reboot every week or so, which to me seems high. I have deleted the internal app caches, but that doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

I've used GSAM in the past with limited success, mostly because it will tell me that some technically named process is running, but for us non-techies, I have a hard time linking the process with the app itself. Do you have any pointers about GSAM?

Well, start simple. On a clean boot, go look at the memory stats. Not the ones in the settings page, the one in the Developer Options page, under 'Running Services'.

A phone that slows down over time usually points to a memory leak. And looking at those stats will help determine that. Don't worry about how much free memory there is (Android tries to use all of it), worry about a process that has a creeping amount of memory in use.

Then look at the App Usage stats in gsam. A process that slows the phone down will sometimes eat up more power as well. But there's no hard and fast rule. Look at memory and power usage, those hopefully will tell you the tale.

By the way, a reboot a week isn't bad really. I never go that long, usually because I'm messing with something that requires a reset.

Let me know what's what... I hope we can iron that out.

Alright, gonna go for it... I enabled the developer options and installed GSAM. I'm gonna let it ride for a cycle and I'll report back any interesting findings.

Thank for your help!

I'd also suggest clearing the cache (format the cache partition. It is good to do this occasionally anyway, particularly after an Android update (such as the monthly security updates) and it doesn't delete any of your information or settings. You might have some corrupted code from an app stuck in the cache, so a reboot is not entirely wiping out the issue. You can find instructions on how to do it here.

Update - So, no big reveals and I didn't find anything wonky the past few days. According to GSAM and a 'Running Services' review, everything seems to be running within normal limits. Haven't had any weird lag either, so that is good.

moge - I did a cache partition cleaning as well. Thanks for the tip!

Hopefully, this is not going to be a common occurrence. Either way, thanks for the tips all!

You aren't wasting your time looking over those stats, by the way... You'll get a good feel on what is running, what it 'should' use, what it shouldn't... then if something does go South, you'll be able to isolate the problem quicker.

Just joined the google N beta since its on its last release. It made a world of a difference in speed on my 6P. Its up to par if not better than my G5 or S7. Its stable and didn't need to wipe anything on my device. Simple update.

I completely agree. It was helpful to have something more detailed than just the standard battery stats under settings, so thanks again!
