files don't delete on cut and paste

Surely a simple answer that will make me look stupid but when I usb connect my S3 to a PC and do a simple cut and paste of video files (from S3 to PC) the files don't delete on the S3. It actually worked out well the first time for unrelated reasons but now it is driving me nuts. thanks....
