For all you experts out there, what is the final word on task managers/memory? Are they really unnecessary?

Read the final statement, you may find a program using up CPU resources. Only easy way is to have some kindof process app like a task killer. But not necessary at all times.

I have left my TasKiller alone for the last 12 hours. All the unused processes that were running in the background that I would have killed, are still running. I am down to about 24M of free memory, where I usually have 75-100. Now I understand what this article is saying, but how long exactly am I supposed to wait for Android to begin killing these tasks on its own? My usually very snappy phone is running increasingly slower. But I am going to wait it out because I want to see if I am wrong.

My awake time has also shot through the roof. What are ways to reduce the awake % time without restarting the phone?

Funny, I keep putting Advanced Task Killer on and then taking it off. I have been running the Eris with it uninstalled for most of the last two days and the phone has been fine - very responsive, no unusual battery depletion, the awake time was about 20% or so. I installed it again yesterday for about an hour and every time I woke it up there was a noticeable delay when I was trying to trace the pattern on my unlock screen that just was not there when I was running with ATK. I uninstalled it again. As usual, YMMV.

Excellent read! I think the link to this article should be stickied, if not already. I've been using a task killer and I have noticed that my battery has improved but my alarm clock never goes on unless I reboot. It's going to be tough because of the perceived benefits but I'm dumping my task killer this weekend.

HaHa, same here. Wax on, wax off. Task killer on, task killer off.

Final word on this would be no, not needed. I've been running without a task killer for a few weeks now and the phone seems to be unaffected by not having it installed. In other words task killers create more problems than they cure.

ignore the clock, I use ATK, my alarm works fine, I just ignore the alarm process.

If you know what should be running, and when it should be running, then manage it yourself. If you don't you'll just keep seeing random problems. Rest assured the system knows what should be running
