Custom SMS Tones

Don't know how many people have been looking for it, but just got this yesterday. This made my day! This was the only thing I missed about my Palm Pre, but now - no more!

It's important to disable the default tone under the messaging app, then enable a default tone under Custom SMS Tones so you don't hear two notification sounds.

did it take you long to find that app?

Lol, yes it did! I've heard about Handcent, but have always liked the reliability and simplicity of the stock messaging app. Figured I'd post it for people like me who have been wanting this feature for a while with their stock messaging app.

I've been using GoSMS. It allows setup of individual SMS notification tones. Plus it's got interesting themes, and feels very similar to the stock Messaging app. Plus it does Popup windows a little smoother than Handcent in my experience.

havent you been able to set a tone per contact before? you just go to the contact, edit contact, and scroll till you see set ringtone or notification and presto, tones per contact

Of course, you were always able to select a custom ringtone for any of the contacts. But for text messaging tones, by default, you can only have one SMS tone unless you use a different messaging app, or the app that I mentioned in the OP.

The only tiff I have with turning off notifications on the stock SMS app is that i dont get that cool little preview of the text in my notification bar. Do any apps allow you to keep this? I tried using Light flow and I got it to work a little bit, but the sms tone and vibrate comes across about 5 seconds before the preview of the text in my notification bar. Let me know if anyone has any ideas. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus
