Find My Phone question (forgot password)

I forgot the password to my old phone. I think my only option is to erase the phone. If I do so, will the phone be a brick or usable again?

I tried booting it from the power up menu, holding power and volume down (or up) but nothing happened.

Unless you can remember the password you are unfortunately out of luck.
