Finger Print Reader Unlock Performance

lol. This is hilarious. I have both thumbs and both index fingers registered.

The piece of $hit reader won't read any the of them 90% of the time.

If there is any video showing the Pixel 6 fsp working......IT'S FAKE.

I’ve had pixels since day one. this will be my single biggest reason for going to another vender.

This is not fake. I just recorded it right now and turned it to a gif to post on here for you. I am running 12L Beta 3. No issues here. Done with right thumb followed by left thumb.

Nice image! Question: when you installed 12L Beta 3 did it wipe your phone or are you able to keep your apps/preferences?

It was just like any update and installed with everything in place. When you finish the beta you move to stable automatically and you can opt out of further betas. But this one is working great!

This beta rocks. FPS is much faster (see above) and phone feels much snappier. If this is the update path that Google is going to take this phone can compete with any out there

I had the same problem, when I redid my prints I tapped the sensor as lightly as possible during setup, when as before I pressed much harder and now I'm like 95%, amazing difference!

The FPS works, but it's slow. It really is the biggest drawback for this phone. I find it annoying that I have to wake the screen to use it.

I have both thumbs and one finger registered. I just tried all non-registered digits to unlock my phone with the FPS....all failed numerous times. Not a single success. I had my wife try....zero success. So I'm not worried in the least.

I also just tried with my UNregistered fingers and no luck (or maybe LUCK since they did not work). I've two pointers and one thumb registered. I also just tried under a very bright LED and it still worked as expected.

I've found, after much playing around, that thumbs seem to be the least reliable digit with which to scan prints. I'm thinking that the surface area is significantly bigger, creating a poorer chance of correct placement. Have been pretty pleased with two scans each of my index and middle finger of my right hand, and one of my left index finger just in case.

Yeah I've had it with the fingerprint scanner. Just had a string of mis-reads. I've just moved to a PIN number. At least that works consistently.

I have both thumbs and a forefinger registered and all three work just fine. When I did the thumbs I made sure to use the very tips and sides along with the pads replicating the natural position of those when I pick up the phone. FPS is very responsive.
I think it all depends on the quality of the person's finger/thumb prints and how the prints are placed on the reader when registering.

This sounds like a "user error" comment and I respectfully disagree. This fps is the absolute worst fingerprint sensor I have ever used on a phone. I was a nexus 6p owner many years ago. That fps was awesome. I've owned a note 9, note 20 ultra, and a z fold 2. All of those phones had fps that were miles better than this one. I've followed all of the tips and advice. I've scanned my fingers, rescanned my fingers, tried multiple placements, and did multiple scans of the same finger. None of it makes any difference. It's still hit or miss for me at least 40% to 50% of the time. I think google knows they messed up with this sensor. They went with a cheaper part for whatever reason (probably to save money and meet a release deadline) and figured they could fix any hardware fps flaws with software updates down the road. They're finding out now that they miscalculated. Of course it still pays off for them because it looks like sales were pretty good last fall but this phone could be so much more enjoyable if it simply had a decent fps. I even suspect it may have something to do with skin color or pigment. I'm not totally sure but I think it would make for an interesting project if this could be tested. Google knows they messed up with this fps and the only real fix will most likely be the pixel 7.

FPS is improved for me but still unreliable. Works better if I moisturise my thumb but shouldn't have to do that and hand gel for the Coronavirus might negate it. Scanner on the back of my Pixel 5 was much more reliable. FPS to access my bank app and GP practice app work much better for some reason. They can't be less concerned about security?

What gets me, is it only sucks in the operating system. Any app that requires a finger print works everytime. Google Android ....maybe 25 percent of time, assuming there are perfect conditions.

this is CLEARLY a Google/Android issue

I traded my 5 in for the 6 and really miss it. It was my favorite out of all the Pixel series.

I have a problem that just started today. The fingerprint reader on the always on display is unresponsive. If I tap the power button to get to the lock screen then the fingerprint reader works correctly. P6 Pro, just did the mid-February update, not on any betas. Rebooting the phone does not work. Anyone have a fix for this?

Update...problem fixed. I went into safe mode and the problem still existed. Then when I rebooted out of safe mode the problem went away! Very weird.

That coupled with the fact thumbs get more "messed" up when working with your hands make them less reliable. The actual FP scanner isn't that bad, it's the other little details that detract from the experience in my opinion

I started erasing and doing fingerprints every week. Takes 2 minutes to do and helps consistency. FPS was much better on Beta but had to leave since Galaxy watch had issues with battery drain and Gpay after joining so went back to stable.

Hopefully the update next week has some FPS improvements

After all the discussion on this topic, I’ll add my voice to the chorus.

Comparing my Pixel 5 and 6 is a mixed bag. I have been using the 5 lately, having installed GrapheneOS on it.

The five is a bit faster and less fussy, but you have to pick the phone up to unlock it, whereas you can unlock the 6 while it sits on a flat surface.

For me personally, the 5 seems easier and more natural. My finger just falls on the sensor without conscious thought.

Yust my opinion.
