Fingerprint/Unlock Question

Got the Pixel Saturday. So far enjoying it, but trying to get use to it. Coming from a Galaxy 5. I was at a local store (they were out of stock) but the salesman there was showing me his. Specifically he would hold his finger on the sensor and it would unlock. Real slick.

Bought mine at a different store, but when setting up the figerprint lock in makes me pair it with either a patter or a pin. Am I missing something? I want to unlock it with just my fingerprint but for some reason can't figure it out. I watched the salesman do it multiple times without entering anything else.

Any help is much appreciated!

You also need to set up pattern or pin or password as back up to fingerprint. It will be used when it can't recognize your fingerprint or your phone is restarted etc. It's the way it works on all smartphones that have fingerprints (even iOS).

Pattern or pin is used as a backup in certain circumstances (think wet hands or bad finger placement) and as the primary unlock after the phone restarts or if locked manually. Android normally requires the backup method, so you're doing it correctly.

You beat me by seconds...

Swipe down from top of screen. Click on gear symbol. Go to Security. You should see fingerprint setup there. Do left and right index finger.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I'm confused because I watched him do it MULTIPLE times and he only used his fingerprint. Nothing else to unlock it.

Right, once you have it set up, that is all you will need and it will work just like that.

You will want the backup. What if the fingerprint reader dies??? You would be locked out of your phone forever.

Also, you should register more than one finger for best use. I have my index finger on both hands registered, so it does not matter how I pick up the phone.

Google also used to make you use your pin (or secondary unlock method) once every 48 hours for security - not sure if they still do that.
