Firmware update 1/18/2011

I happened to see the update last night (2012-01-18) and installed it. I don't know if it was supposed to improved WiFi performance. Mine did pretty well but not awesome before and as far as I can tell it's about the same now.

GPS is still completely broken on mine however. I just installed the "GPS Status" app to try and collect more data and as far as it's concerned there are no satellites in the sky. I certainly didn't buy the thing for GPS navigation, but it would be nice to have it working.

The GPS got worse for me. Before this update, I was able to get a GPS lock standing motionless outside for 30 seconds. Now I don't even get that. In a test I did today, my unit could only see 2 satellites and couldn't lock on to anything.

Hopefully more GPS fixes will be coming from Asus.

It seems they slipped some graphics improvements in there, because I used to suffering fromthe black stuttery bars, and now I don't. I was really thinking about returning, but now I don't have to!

The keyboard seems to function much better for me after the last update. Sites like Engadget seem much smoother as well

Honestly, I was thinking about it today. I have until the 24th to return the Prime back to Best Buy. And in all honestly, I was really thinking I might. But this thing has completely exceeded my expectations. After this latest firmware update, I have had zero problems. Wifi was never too much of an issue, but now it has improved to my standards, GPS, which I never really used, works up to standard as well. The screen @800p is outstanding. Waiting another 6 months or so for the 1080p version doesn't seem worth it to me. This thing is a beast as is and will remain a beast for a very long time thanks to its cores and Tegra 3. I think tablets should last longer than phones because tablets don't have 2-year contracts and discounts. They should have a 3-4 year shelf life when it comes to its software even though I'm sure that is unrealistic. But it should be realistic.

Longevity for tablets in really more about how many charge cycles u get out of the batteries since replacement is not the easiest. The Prime's batteries will more than likely not last as long as the cores.

My wifi is working way better. Im not regretting my purchase now. my was wifi was unbearable and my wife would laugh at me with her iPad

How long do tablet batteries last? And is it even possible to replace them?

Yes, possible to replace, but not all that easy. Especially for the everyday Joe (Jane).

Life depends heavily on charging cycle and mileage will vary. But if you charge every day, while you can expect to probably start to see a slight decline in battery life after about 6 months, it would be most noticeable after one year. That said, it should last you for several years, with moderate declines in the over all battery life on a day to day basis after 1 year of steady use...but that's not Prime specific. That would be for most any tablet.

I was ready to return to BB until this latest update. GPS works as expected and locks on to Sat's inside the house where before they would not lock on. Wifi retains good signal.

Still confused how Asus annouced a problem due to the aluminum back but did a software update to improve performance. Maybe it's all a bunch of BS. We may never know.

webpages seem to be loading slower for me now. maybe im just expecting faster and its the same haha...

does anyone else's video chat not work in Talk anymore? i pressed the microphone icon next to someone who i have a video icon for on my phone, and it freezes every time i try that

Where is this stupid update???? Mine says no update every time I check it and the asus site still does not have it posted for download?

Got the update last night, not sure if anything is better or worse on mine as I've not had any GPS/WiFi issues. That said, both before and after, I've been having a lot of issues with websites crashing the browser. They'll load (some don't fully), and then the browser becomes non-responsive. Sometimes the browser crashes out, sometimes it eventually resumes.

Also noticing several apps crashing randomly, especially games. Been trying to play Dungeon Defenders and it crashes frequently and has audio issues.

All this said: Is the Prime *supposed* to come with ICS pre-loaded? I've been under the impression it only ships with Honeycomb, but my unit had ICS pre-loaded -- that said, it was supposedly an "open-box, we-just-showed-it-to-a-customer" unit... (yeah, FutureShop typical BS line...)

I received the update FW update today. My wifi hadn't been great before when it was 2 bars or less. I had previously noticed a drop off from 8Mbps to 1.3Mbps in my living room. With the new update I was up to 8Mbps-10Mbps.

I didn't bother to check the gps.

This update actually did worse for me. Now I can't get GPS at all even with wifi on.
