Thanks for the reply BotanicalStig. The difference seems to be that I can't disable the default lock screen without losing fingerprint unlock. If I turn stock lock off and use only Next Lock, I have to type in a PIN as it deletes my fingerprints. I'll keep playing around.

Stock fingerprint unlock works for me.. I'm not sure if there's any other way to do this, but try changing your EMUI theme. It will ask "Would you like to use magazine unlock for this theme?"- or something like this, hit NO... and it should work just fine (it works for me). If you just love the stock theme this might be a problem, though.

There's probably a setting for this somewhere, but I never needed to look for it. Here are a couple of themes I recommend trying,
