Just stop here.

I think the verge mentioned a simple drop breaking their review unit z3 compact as well.

While I do plan to get a TPU case this bothers me a little.

That's why I am getting insurance on it. Worth it for this phone I think.

Thinking of insurance also. Anyone have any good suggestions for insurance providers?

I think it is down to luck. I don't put cases on my phones and have only (so far) had one phone destroyed though accidental damage - my Note 2 got wet (at least that shouldn't be a worry with Sony). However I have had this little Sony for a month now and it seems to have had a few accidents already. The worst was the phone falling out of my pocket, down the carpeted stairs and onto a wooden floor. I went down the stairs, already thinking about the insurance procedure, certain I'd be greeted with a smashed screen or a cracked back! Not a mark on the thing. I'm sure that if it had landed at a slightly different angle there would have been carnage!

As I said - luck!

I haven't used mine outside yet, not sure if I will because I've got other mobiles.

I dropped my z3c on tile floor, the screen cracked and touchscreen became useless, didn't have ins.. sent it to sony to fix figuring it would cost a couple hundred, but they fixed it , sent it back, no charge...wow was i surprized..Thank You Sony

Sorry to hear this...
I've dropped my Z3C three times already and the phone doesn't have a single scratch, dent, or anything alike and it still works flawlessly...I must say, coming from 15 years with Nokias, I was really impressed. I expected the phone to break at first drop.

Sucks. One of the reasons I always purchased accidental protection coverage if its offered on a phone when I buy direct.

Mine fell from the couch to the floor (less than 2 feet) and huge crack down the front.

If it were just the crack, I could live with it, but as the original poster said, even one crack renders the screen totally useless. It completely stopped registering touches after that. Luckily I was able to get it replaced easily.

Please use a case on your Z3/Z3c. This is one fragile phone.

Cracked screens suck and I feel bad for you all who've had it happen but you really can't blame Sony. Every phone I've owned in the past few years suffer the same fate if dropped.

iPhone, Galaxy phones, HTC, LG ect. they all crack or break when dropped. I honestly don't see this as a Sony issue. Now if the screen cracked all on it's own, as some have reported, then that's a different story.

If you drop a phone, any current or modern phone, expect it to break or crack the screen.

These phones are not cheap and since they will break when dropped a case (not for me as my devices are always naked) and / or insurance is almost mandatory. Even moreso with a phone like this that has glass front AND back.

I have the Sony insurance that was purchased along with the phone for $80 and it covers a one time replacement for free. There is also Square Trade that only cost like $5 a month..

The issue isn't that they break. All phones crack if dropped from high enough. The issue is that the screen becomes 100% unusable with even one crack. Look around at all the broken iphones, galaxy phones, etc. that you see on a daily basis. People break and keep using their phones all the time.

The unique issue here is that one crack renders the screen (and ergo the entire phone) useless since it stops registering touches. This is the only phone I know of that has this problem.

I don't know.. I've dropped mine twice and there is not a single mark, scratch, dent or ding anywhere on it. I guess it all depends on how it lands and what it lands on and even then maybe luck comes into play..

Another one bites the dust. My wife dropped her Z3c from about two feet up onto CARPET. And it was in a CASE. Screen shattered and, of course, touchscreen unresponsive. There's no doubt in my mind, this is one of the most fragile phones out there.

I urge the rest of you to please be careful with yours. And I won't be buying another Sony phone anytime soon. 😢

Not trying to sound ignorant but I have to write to this. It seems like a lot of folks drop their phones somewhat regularly. What's going on with that? When I read that someone has dropped their phone more than 2x in less than 3 years I am bewildered. Accidents happen, yes. However, is it really unavoidable to drop the phone or are some folks just careless? If the phone is not that important to you then there may be some carelessness going on. That's okay, not everyone puts a lot of value on such things. To some a phone requires no more care than a set of car keys, I suppose. For me, well, phones are kinda valuable and kinda expensive and worth being extra extra cautious with.

I'm just trying to better understand how folks can be dropping their phones so often. I'm truly nothing special but haven't dropped my phone outside in... years. I have dropped my phone on carpet in the past 2 years, shame on me. Before I even pull my phone out of my pocket or pouch I'm thinking, "I don't want to drop my phone so I need to be cautious." That thought happens in the quickest of split seconds but the important thing is that the thought does indeed happen. I've tought my daughter to have this thought process too because if she breaks it I'm gonna make her live with it.

... but yes, occasionally accidents can happen which is why I believe in cases and screen protectors.

Apologies for the length but I'm trying to understand how someone can drop their phone more than maybe 1x every few years (especially outside) if they're being careful and treat it like a valuable object. No, I don't covet my phones but I do care.

That written, I'll prolly drop one of my phones today and break it.
