First exercise with Gear S2 - Not so great

So WSRobert, did you find any solutions to your "running while streaming music" dilemma? I want to be able to run and either stream or play stored music and also have a fitness monitor during the day. I really WANT the Gear S2 (which I just got maybe 28 days ago) to be the answer... but did you find another device?

I can't believe it's this hard to find a device that will:
  • count steps
  • track a run with GPS accuracy
  • store music for you to play

and also have a battery that won't die before 6 PM. I looked into the Moto 360 sport and heard horrid things about battery life.

I mean seriously. How hard can this combination be?

Answer: Motorola Motoactv

Have spends countless times trying to find a better replacement...but nothing beats this 4 year old wonder.

Bluetooth, wifi,ant+, cadence, etc sensors
GPS BUILT IN WITH a map you can view...VERY helpful if get lost
Music storage
Motivation for each type of workout
ACCURATE pedometer
Notifications etc
Great battery life, simple micro usb connection, clip on, bike mount, watch etc etc etc!!!!

Blows anything out of the water. Tried them all. The best and amazing and crazy that in 4 years still nothing can replace what this can do

I will be getting an S2 with my purchase of the new GS7. I see this post talks mostly about using the watch as a fitness tracker. Is there support for other apps as well and are they useful?

The 360 Sport has really good battery life. It's on par with the S2.

I joined the forum just to post on this- I've recently begun tracking calories as I'm trying to lose weight. I've gone in and set up my s health with all my info...weight, height, age, sex, etc. I'm use My Fitness Pal to track calories in which I think is the best app for that. For calories burned I'm not really concerned with the pushups, squats or pilates I do in the mornings. I can't find any information on how to accurately calculate that stuff. What I am concerned with is my walks. I'm walking about 2 miles (verified through measured track) in 30 minutes which is about what I would do jogging. My s2 says my heart rate is usually at about 170-190 which I believe since I'm tracking my heart rate thought the day and resting I'm typically around 60ish. What I'd really like to know is if the calories burned are accurate. I see some of you saying you only have 200 burned...when I check s health for total calories burned for the day I'm around 600 to 800 depending on how often I was out of the office or how long I did my speed walk. Those numbers just seem surprisingly high. I mean I KNOW I'm trying to get in a good calorie burn but I'm worried its over estimating while some of you say its under.

Overall I love my gear. Now that I have it I wouldn't trade it. Just wanting some info on how it/s health calculates calories burned.

so if you run for 2 hours and only turn the screen on once, it only uses 1 measure to find the average? Does it give an average?

no - it measures regularly even if the screen isn't on. If you don't disable gesture controls it'll keep turning the screen on but that doesn't have anything to do with the HRM doing its job.

I read in one of the other responses that the S2 doesn't use HR to estimate calories burned but I think it does. And, that's actually a more accurate way to do it.

You can compare here: Heart Rate Based Calorie Burn Calculator | SHAPESENSE.COM

All you need is your average HR and the time you did the activity (and you should know your weight, though that doesn't make a huge difference - not as much as age does). You don't even need to specify what you're doing.

I say this because earlier this week I biked for 1.5 hrs with an avg HR of 166. I am 41 yrs old, female, and weight ~140lbs. S2 said I burned 970 calories. The above link says 1050. So, not bad. Especially since the S2 might actually be using your actual instantaneous HR and not the average. Because during that bike ride my HR was sometimes 190 and sometimes 115. So, I attribute differences in the estimate to differences in the methodology (average vs instantaneous/monitoring).

So, if you're a 25 yr old female, 140lbs, and you walked for 30 minutes with an average HR of 180 then it should estimate you burned about 387 calories, based on the shapesense calculator.

So, if in doubt, compare the S2 estimate to the shapesense estimate.
