First impressions?

I just wanted to mention something I found interesting that might help others, when I was at Best Buy the other day looking at the pixel 6's, I went in expecting to see these monster phones... especially the 6 Pro. I have a pixel 3XL with a slim case on it, and when I held it up to the Pro it actually made the Pro look a little puny  ;) I actually looked right past the Pro at first because I was looking for this monster of a phone lol. The Pro was the same height as my 3XL but way narrower, which made it look and feel substantially smaller overall.

In fact after that I went around trying to find any phone that was bigger than my 3XL, and I couldn't. All the new flagships are 6 Pro sized, and because of being much narrower, they all feel smaller. That's a very good thing Overall the new narrower big phones will be way easier to pocket carry and use one handed than the older, wider big phones. The one thing I have noticed though is that when you put a case on a pixel 6/6 Pro that fills out the back of the phone flush with the camera bar, it makes for a thick phone
I had the same experience. After I ordered my P6Pro I went down to BB to check it out. In my mind I was imagining a really big phone. All the reviewers I watched described the phone as very large. When I saw the the P6P I was pleasantly surprised how not large it was, and that's coming from the Pixel 4a.

I've had my Pro for two days (long-delayed shipping) and it hasn't had a single hiccup so far. It's a few mm taller than my 3aXL and slightly heavier but doesn't feel huge or anything. It's a vast improvement in every way.

The battery is still settling in, of course. The camera is uh-mazing. I knit, and for the first time with a phone camera I got true to life color on yarn pics. The screen is gorgeous, everything is faster and snappier, speakers are fine (with adaptive sound). I haven't had a single issue with the FP scanner (I've mentioned I work in biometrics, particularly fingerprinting, which may be why).

I don't use a screen protector, but I do have a case. I can't speak to those of you with S21s, but if you're coming from similar path as me (Nexus 5 through an OG Pixel XL and then a 3aXL with various other Android devices along the way) this is a fantastic upgrade. YMMV.

Thank you for your mini review! That's so awesome about how the camera brings out the detail and colours of the yarn! I love hearing stories like that! Enjoy your new phone!

Since you work in biometrics, particularly fingerprinting, do you have any recommendations on setting up the fingerprint sensor?

Since you work in biometrics, particularly fingerprinting, do you have any recommendations on setting up the fingerprint sensor?

Absolutely. Start with clean, dry hands. Moisturize with a non-greasy lotion to help bring out your friction ridges. I like Corn Huskers Lotion.

When you add your fingerprints make sure to press firmly, but not super hard. Make sure you capture all areas of your fingerprint - the pad, the tip, and the sides. I have only one copy of each of my thumbs and forefingers and have not had a failure to unlock on the first try with any of them.

Finally, when you go to unlock your phone don't just tap the sensor. Leave your finger there for just a moment. You don't have to press hard or leave it there for multiple seconds, but do give it a quick one-count to allow the optical scanner to register that you are there. Optical scanners need light and a smidge of time to read a print.

Hope this helps.

I have a question. As someone who worked for a (let's call it) a company that had facilities that were fingerprint scanners (optical I believe in most), retinal scanners to just plain old ID card readers (did see one facility that had a hand reader and retinal, but I was only allowed access with someone with an approved hand and eye:D, I never used any lotion on my fingers before scanning.

In fact when they registered the prints they told me to just wash my hand to remove any possible grease, oil that might be on them due to the "equipment" I might handle and if when using it to enter a building if first rejected just make sure they were clean (person registering the prints noted just to wipe them on my pants, a towel, etc.

So, my question and that is all it is from a person who DOES not work in the biometrics field, if a person uses a lotion (e.g., Corn Huskers or something similar) prior to registering their prints, wouldn't those ridges not be as clear when they attempted to use the FPS to unlock the phone at normal times. If it was needed to use a lotion every time I was to open the phone, that would be a non-starter for me and likely more than just me. (And I will attest Corn Huskers is a great moisturizer; I have a bottle.)

Again just curious.

The reason we suggest Corn Huskers is because it moisturizes from inside out - no greasiness on the outside of your finger - which plumps the ridges. This helps with registration of your prints.

In terms of using the scanner after your prints are registered, as long as your hands aren't really dirty and your skin isn't super dried out the scanner just needs to be able to see enough to match against the excellent prints you registered. So, for instance, if you use Corn Huskers as your regular moisturizer you don't need a special or additional application to open your phone because your skin isn't dried out in the first place.

Does this help clarify things? If not just let me know. I can go into further detail if needed.

ETA I use Corn Huskers any time I wash my hands which keeps my skin soft and healthy, but I don't put more on just to open my phone. Make sense?

Can someone try something out for me? I didn't want to make a thread about this. I just tried to take a picture of our Christmas tree all decorated and the camera seems to have a hard time being able to take a picture. As I look at the phone screen the live image keeps flickering in shades of black on and off. This is so weird I haven't even seen this happen on older Pixel devices. It dramatically changes the final picture and not in a good way.

Can someone try this and see if it happens to you as well?

Oh, wow! How odd! Hopefully other Pixel 6 users will see this and report back!

Make sense to you, but still not to me. However, I have no idea how these things function so I'll go with what you say.

I guess in the long run if it works for me, that is all that will be important. I won't know that until sometime in late Dec. when (or if) google gets it to me by the 17 as stated on my account order status.

Thanks for the further information.

If it doesn't work, then back it goes. I'll give an ultrasonic reader a test.

The short answer is make sure your hands are freshly washed and dried and you've applied a little bit of Corn Huskers before you set up your fingerprints. Make sure your skin isn't super dry or super dirty when you want to unlock your phone.

I guess I should send it back the day it is received.:( I very seldom use any lotions, I live in a very dry climate at a higher than average altitude and sometimes, I can spend a few hours a day using chemicals used to clean and dry handguns (my hobby). I do wash my hands after working on these weapons, but hands are always dry; I've learned to live with it.

I'll still give the phone a test run, but if what you say turns out the way it sounds, it might be a futile effort to even attempt to use this phone's optical FPS. In that case, it will be a test for the ultrasonic in another brand.

After setting up my thumb print as two prints I never had any issues that would cause me to send my P6Pro back. I was never frustrated using the the fps. I never did all the recommended washing, drying, and greasing up my thumb.

It's different for everyone. My advice is meant to be useful if one is having trouble with the fps. If it's working great for you as is, that's fantastic.

I wasn't commenting on or even referring to your advice or post. I was responding to RETG's post and my experience with the fps and how I set mine up.

I'm coming from a Pixel 3XL 128GB to a Pixel 6 Pro 128GB. I stayed with 128GB because my photos upload to the cloud quickly enough that I seldom if ever exceed 30% of total storage. 128GB is more than I really need.

The first thing that I noticed was the difference in speed. What a pleasure to have everything work so quickly!

With all the horror stories about the FPS, I was a bit concerned. There was no need for concern at all as my 6Pro FPS is exceptionally reliable. It works just as well as the rear FPS on my 3XL. I do notice that I need to press and hold until the light comes on, but the time to do that would be measured in fractions of a second and is totally offset by the additional security. I'm quite pleased with my FPS.

I'm impressed with the quality and brightness of the screen. I've never used adaptive brightness as it was never bright enough for me on other phones. So far 75% brightness seems to be the maximum I want to use indoors. I'm sure I will want to go to 100% when outdoors.

Battery life so far seems quite good. I'm at 56% after a very intensive 10 hours of setting up and discovering. My ordinary use would never be this intensive with this much screen time.

Those are my first impressions after the first 10 hours of use. It's quite definitely a keeper!

Thanks Gary,
I'm hoping to have your experience when I finally get my 6 Pro. Making my LG G4 last until then is getting painful though!

I LOVE the haptics on this phone. That's my main day one impression. I also have been surprised to see that the FPS hasn't been as bad as advertised. I thoroughly enjoy the experience of mostly google apps as that was what I did mostly on all of my Samsung phones.
