First install of ROM

I've had mt Droid X rooted for a while and I'm getting ready to take the plunge into ROMs. I've read around and watched videos, I just want to make sure I'm getting it right. I got bootstrap, titanium backup (not pro), I've made backups with both programs. I'm thinking of going with the Liberty 1.5 ROM.

Now, if I understand everything correctly I will loose everything to install a new ROM. Will I use the titanium backups for my programs? Will that just restore my settings and such, not that actual app? I'm just not 100% sure of what I exactly backed up. Just kinda followed a tutorial. Also, if I want to restore my phone to stock, do I just restore my original bootstrap backup?

After ROM is installed, I can just use the Liberty toolbox to swap between themes, right?

I have altered other electronics in the past, my Wii and previous phone for example :) I've never bricked anything, I'm just very cautious about it.

Anything else I should be aware of?

I'm not an expert (yet), but here's my experience.

You'll lose your programs and have to reinstall them. But Titanium Backup will save the settings for those programs. It will give you the option to restore the programs and the settings, but I've had problems with that before. So the safest thing to do is reinstall the program yourself from the Market and then restore the settings with Titanium.

And the Market remembers which apps you bought so you don't have to pay for them again. Just reinstall them.

+1 on that.
I'll add that while its tempting to not wipe data/cache when installing ROMs, not doing so is most likely going to cause a bootloop.

+1 on wiping/factory reset. Dont worry about remembering the apps you installed either. Go to the market. hit the launcher key go to my apps or downloads whatever your phone says and they will all be there. I usually just go to titanium and go through the list of apps and install the ones i want with data. If your on level 135 of bubble buster youll go right back. Plus its a little faster if you have 30 apps. If you plan on themeing do a bootstrap recovery before the theme though so if you hate the theme restore the recovery and try a new theme. Cant really theme over other themes. Oh and make sure you sync your google account for contacts and calender before the wipe. They will all be there for you on the other side of the flash. Liberty 1.5 rocks.

I'll add that Liberty is good and very popular right now. It does have a nice toolbox.
I would check out rubiX too if you are into AOSP ROMs.
I try them all but always seem to come back to rubiX

2 more questions I've got.

I assume it'll be rooted after I install the ROM. Will I have to reinstall the Droid X bootstrap?

And the bootstrap backup I just did, will that bring me back to where I am right now?

Yes, yes, and yes. Bootstrap needs to be reinstalled the rom does come pre rooted and if you were to have any problems you could restore your old backup and it will bring everything you have right at the point you did the backup back. i.e. contacts apps calender. A suggestion if your going to do this all try rom manager so you can go to the manage restore backups and rename the backup you made. maybe stock and then if you theme you could back up before and name it stockliberty or whatnot. Makes it easier come time to restore or whatever.

So, I'm pretty just diving into this because I'm a geek and like to tinker with computers. Is it worth it? Besides HDMI, which I never use, what else do I loose from stock? And what do I gain?

I've got rom manager. Do I still need to to backups with liberty toolbox?

You gain speed, stability and tethering. And that wonderfully geeky feeling that comes from knowing you made your phone do what you wanted it to do instead of what The Man wanted it to do. And free beer. And hot chicks.

Okay, I made those last two up. But the rest is true. I read it on the internet.

Hah! Well, I got beer in the fridge and I'm married, so sticking it to the man is all I got left. :)

Double checking my backup now, then we're off to Liberty.
