First night impressions.

Honestly, the distinction between replace sense with the launcher, or sense still running, is useful. I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable tech person, but I haven't always paid enough attention to android/sense etc. I have never had HTC phone, and not familiar with how launcher vs sense works. I use to dabble a bit with launchers and even custom roms but found the experience not great. But I think that was a result of the phone. I was using the Samsung Moment at the time, and I installed launchers/etc, but it always seemed my phone was slower with them. But that phone is slow in general. With my motorola photon, I never got into the launchers or custom roms, as I found folder creation and such good enough to not need anything else. For the HTC One, I am interested in launchers, but I don't know if they affect performance at all. I need to research the performance and etc. So I am still in research mode, so when people point out those things it is helpful.

Like the first impressions, I am super excited for this phone. The camera will be interesting to try, but I have my canon dslr for anything serious. I just want a phone that is fast, can jam out all my music, and allow me to keep updated on websites/info. So I am really excited for HTC One.

Good honest review. Sounds like a great phone but not a phone that meets every expectation. I hope more user reviews like yours come out with a balanced non fanboy analysis that accepts the good points with the bad. I think sense is a matter of taste and preference. The build materials and construction however appears not to be the 'slam dunk' that has been hyped and again will be down to preference.

So far I'm an very impressed with this phone. Mind you I'm still exploring this beauty.
Thus far:
Build is extremely solid. I have no gaps whatsoever. The are a couple slightly, small, rough spots on the edges, but I believe that will go away in time. It's that brand new feel.
Sound-omg, I was not expecting them to be this good. Even the hubby was very impressed.
Blinkfeed, so far I'm not feeling it. I'm wanting to use a different launcher to get rid of it, BUT I'm going to wait. Gonna give it a chance.

.....I'm still exploring. But I am VERY satisfied with my new phone!!!

Yeah, I was going to give it a chance too, but got so frustrated with it after a couple hours that I said screw it. It is just hard to use the app drawer the way they have it, and the Sense launcher doesn't allow you to change icons, and I am very picky about what my icons look like.

I have been using my launcher for almost 2 years and love the way it works. Using sense launcher was just such a step backward that I couldn't make it past the first night.

Particular things that other launchers allow - changing icons, getting rid of the text under the icons (I mean the Netflix icon says Netflix. Why do I need text below it saying Netflix?, etc.) swipe up for app drawer is something that is ingrained in me. So I don't want the apps drawer icon on the dock bar, etc. There are just so many freedoms to android that the OEM launchers clamp down on that I really can't live with sense or touch wiz.

The oem launchers are almost as bad as iOS (and worse in many ways) and I can't stand using iOS because it is not customizable to what I want just like sense or touchwiz.

And what launcher is it that you're using?

ADW ex

I find each launcher I have tried has its own good points, I am using ADW ex because it was the only one I could find that let me change the folder icon. Elsewhere in this thread, someone said that you can do that on either Apex or Nova now too (maybe both) but when I started using ADW ex you couldn't. You also can't do it on the free ADW I think.

IIRC, Go Launcher EX does this as well. For free, even.

Hey Erik,

Here are a few camera tips...

Don't like noise? Turn it down by lowering the sharpness. -1 will get rid of some of the noise and lower the oversharpening the camera does.

Need more punch in the colors? Change saturation to +1

If you have questions, I'll be around.

Does the camera hold those settings after you exit out of the app, or restart and shut down the phone?

Haven't had much time to play - busy week for a reporter - but just putting my Facebook and Twitter accounts into BlinkFeed, it's really nice! First call I got - a return call from a cop, no less -- and dragging that dang ring up to answer, it wouldn't go and I missed the call. Not sure if there's a setting I need to tweak or what. But so far, the screen is wow, battery life is acceptable - have charger at home and work - and if first impressions are important, I think I won't be sorry I didn't wait until later to compare it to the S 4;-) It's my third HTC, and I want someone other than Samsung and Apple to make it in the market, so a vote with the dollars, as well as after reading the glowing reviews. Knock on wood;-)

I think the biggest issue I've had is the keyboard. Dang thing makes me feel fat fingered! Loving it as far as day two went, just learning how to customize it. I really only enjoy that default black screen, I don't use blink feed or that other customizable home screen. I am wondering how to change that bg from black.

Absolutely loving it so far. Coming from an S2 which I enjoyed a lot, but this thing blows it away. Super smooth operating and the speakers. WOW! I'd heard a lot of buzz about them, but I wasn't expecting them to be this good.

Also, I ran Sense for about 5 hours but I've since switched back to Nova. Just used to it and love the way it is customizable. I need my infinite scrolling on home screens and to be able to drag apps straight to them without going through that convoluted Sense process.
