I'll start out by saying that I am technically inclined but have been worried about rooting my phone due to so many issues that I have read about regarding ROM's and missing features, even the newest IHO appears to allow you to fix the auto installs with Google Android Market but you have to sacrifice MMS. I have read an enormous amount of material in numerous threads over the course of months and always left it at that, no root.
Now I am rooted and I want to let you know not to worry. I rooted for one of the main reasons everyone does, more room. I was sick and tired of picking and choosing what apps to keep on my phone and what had to go. I have not changed the ROM so I am currently a rooted user that gets all the benefits of additional storage without any of the worries that are brought on by potential ROM issues.
What I did so you know:
1) Backed up my SD card in case thing went wrong.
2) Used Minitool Partition Wizard suggested by the LinkSD and you (a tutorial) thread in androidforums to prep my SD card for LinkSD
3) Followed post 1 in this forum thread called [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM
Although I did skip the custom ROM part and stayed with LauncherPro on the stock Optimus V system the instructions were spot on and everything went flawless. In fact, I spent more time backing up my SD card than it actually took to root.
Bottom line, don't worry. If you're concerned about functionality don't load a new ROM just root and load the tools in the instructions plus LinkSD. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner, 73 apps and still more room than I can ever recall.
Once I see MMS back on IHO I probably will go that route!
