So i have had my Galaxy S3 for a couple of days now and really like it, just used stock and bought some apps i enjoyed, I've been stuck in the Apple eco-system since the first iPhone and its nice to have a change and love the phone and how easy it handles anything thrown at it.

Im moving from the UK to USA in 2 weeks and while i still have my iPhone 4S think i will use the S3 as my main phone as both are unlocked, but my question is this, i don't understand what i would get from flashing my phone with a different rom?

Whats the benefit of this, right now I'm using everything default that came with the phone so should i do this? Where do i start, what would i gain from this?

I have also read there was supposed to be an update but my current carrier that the phone came on (Three) have not given it out yet?

Rooting and custom ROMs offer people OPTIONS. That is the key point.

Options like...

Wireless tethering
Use of backup & restore applications to fully backup apps & data on your device.
Running custom ROMs
Using custom kernels (allows overclocking of processor, undervolting & more, in most cases allows better battery life)
Run custom themes along with a ROM which can completely change the overall look of the OS/device.

There are more things but those are the main/common reasons.

So i been trying to understand it, a custom rom is kinda like if a launcher from the play store is built into the system, so not like running on top but thats the actual phone?

Well in order to flash a custom rom you will need to root your phone. Rooting your phone grants you, the user, access to all the phones systems and such. Most people will use a Gingerbreak.apk.

Roms are the best part of rooting your phone. You install, or flash, a rom from your recovery. The best part of roms is how you can change your whole phone basically. Before I flashed GTR Reloaded 7.8 I was running the joyfully optimus port, which basically made my phone look and act like an iphone. There are all kinds of roms that will change your phone.

Roms are not like a launcher, as a launcher is just adjusting the display that you see. A rom could be considered like different software for your phone. It isnt something that just runs over the software you already have.

First, the launcher is only the "application launcher dock & the application list", that is as deep as a launcher goes...

Custom ROMs can be many different things...

Normally a custom ROM starts with having any carrier or OEM bloatware removed. (Yes there are always options available to get these back if need be)

Next custom ROMs usually are supported with a custom kernel to provide better performance and battery life.

This is usually followed up with additions like extra options in the SHUT DOWN screen like, Reboot option which is handy.

A common thing also found is the addition of customizable toggles (on/off) in your notification pulldown area. Examples include SOUND, DATA, BLUETOOTH, GPS, SOUND.. These are just some of many that are possible depending on what the dev offered with the ROM.

Custom ROMs main big plus is the devs will apply whatever known mods and fixes to cleanup whatever broken or problematic things the carrier/OEM & Google has left behind.

Ahhhh I see I wouldn't mind d getting rid of the three stuff and start up on my phone since I will use a different carrier in the USA. Sounds pretty good.

It looks like the popular ones are omega and cyanogen 9 is there a big difference between these?

In terms of the gs3 there aren't very many ROMs out and development has been relatively slow for various reasons. I can't wait until the JB ROMs start rolling out :D

I'm not familiar with Omega but Cyanogen Mod 9 is (a modified w/options of vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich 4.x).

Its the most popular and well known/supported custom ROM available. This same team of developers will probably be the same ones to bring CM 10 (Jelly Bean) to many devices long before they get an actual OEM supported update if they are lucky enough to get one at all..

Development has been slow due the Restore to Stock options that have now surfaced for SGSIII. I think most devs just like us, didn't want to get into a bad situation where they needed the escape route.

I know some devs were waiting to get their 32 gb models in hand before starting development.

Right so if I go for cyan9 I will just get better performance overall so seems like a good choice.
