Flashing rom over rom

Hey everyone...

Here's another noobish question, but hopefully it'll help others as well.

I installed CyaogenMod 6 with the Google aps on my Evo using Rom Manager and it installed perfectly well on it's own. If I want to test out other roms such as Myn's TwoPointTwo rom that was just released on 11/5/10, can I do it just like I did with CM6 without having to do anything extra?

Do I need to "uninstall" CM6 and THEN install Myn TwoPointTwo, or can I just load up Rom Manager, download the new rom, and install it as normal?

Just flash whatever rom. It'll basically override whatever rom you're currently using. Make sure you do a nandroid backup first though just in case the new rom your flash doesn't work or you just don't like it because you'll lose everything from the rom that's getting overridden.

Thanks buddy. :)

In Rom Manager, when I clicked to install the Warm TwoPointTwo rom, it also had a list of kernels at the bottom of the optional download packages. What benefits do I gain from flashing one of those kernels? And if I DO flash one of them, do I just check the box and Rom Manager handles flashing it like normal? Or do I have to do something special? I'm still a total noob when it comes to this Android stuff...So familiarizing myself with Rom Manager is proving to be the best starting grounds. :)

depending on what kernal ya want you can choose one on the list and yes rom manager will install it for you. I tried to get myself familiar with clockwork and mastering that before i moved to simple ol rom manager but hey whatever works for ya.

youll be a romahol soon so watch out

Ill say this in simple terms haha.

There is no way to uninstall a rom, you'd have no phone hhaha
When you flash a new rom, unless its cm6, which can be flashed over itself without a data wipe, you wipe your user data and cache.

Then after your data and cache is wiped, you flash the rom which will format the special internal storage that holds your system and your behind the scenes utilities, and automatically fills it back up with that roms system and utilities.

It does this automatically with something called a script, which is computer language instructions basically.

As for rom manager and kernels, its no different than if you flashed them manually through recovery, it just automates it and does it for you. Kernels work out differently depending on the person, I'd run the stock kernel for a few days, and then see where your at before flashing a new one. Just so you can compare what's better ya know?

Thanks again for your useful descriptions. :)

I went ahead and flashed Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo rom and boy...I'm loving this one WAY more than CM6. It's simply gorgeous.

Question though.. Do you know how I can go about replacing the font? I chose to install the Coconut (or whatever it was called) font from the optional packages when I installed the Warm rom, but after messing with it some, it looks like some of the special symbols aren't included in that font pack. So going back to the regular font should fix that...Any idea how to do that?

Also, I'd like to use the Warm TwoPointTwo default bootanimation that comes with Myn's rom instead of the extra one I chose in the optional bits (same place I chose that coconut font in Rom Manager before flashing the rom). Any idea on how to change that to the default bootanimation?

Oops, one more question.. Although Myn got a LOT right with the theming of this rom, I detest the theme that was put on the Market. Any idea on how to get that back to the original market without Myn's extra touch of "elegance" to it? Hah

Dont wanna speak for him, but besides the heavy theming, there's really nothing that spectacular about Myn's. I checked out the new Myn's and while there are a few extra stuff, there's nothing really special about it. Not trying to take anything away from the developers at all because it's still in my top 3 ROMs, but besides the sick and absolute gorgeous theme it's another Sense rom. While CM is pretty bland looking (especially compared to Myn's, CM is a billion times faster and has some really sick features. Overall it's just a much better rom. I could never see myself choosing Myn's over CM to be honest. But that's just me.

To answer your question re: fonts and boot animation, the easiest way would be to reinstall the Rom with the settings you want. You don't learn anything, but it gets the job done.

Why'd you go back?

Jerzy is right, besides I don't have 4G and I rarely use HDMI.

Myns is the only sense rom ill even touch, so really that's pretty good haha. If I feel like sense I always turn to myn, no contest. Its the best sense rom out there.

That being said cm6 is faster, more customizable, and I squeeze 10-16 hours out of a day with pretty heavy use.

Besides, it might be ugly stock, but there's soooooo many themes.

There's quite a few things about CM6 that I didn't really enjoy looking at (theme wise). The notification bar when it's been dragged down wasn't too appealing, nor was the threaded messaging look for text messages. A lot of the interface just looked too amateurish. On top of that, my Facebook and Google contacts didn't really sync up too well. That's a pretty important feature for me (don't ask me why, I just enjoy having my Facebook contacts linked to the real contacts and having Facebook fill in the blanks on contacts I don't have). I dunno... I just didn't really enjoy the look of CM6 much at all.

Am I the only one left that actually enjoys the Sense interface? :P

Well, yea, I knew that haha... But it's the only rom I've come across that gives that look. Which I guess is why I labeled it the "CM6 theme" hahaha.
