I had read that the Note 8 came with a flashlight app, so I deleted the one I had been using that automatically downloaded on this phone when I synced. But now I can't find one on the phone in apps or widgets. Do I need to install one again? (And I am not interested in anything that requires Bixby or otherwise speaking into the phone.)

pull down your notification shade, it is one of the quick toggles.

Thanks. I see it there. I guess no way to add a shortcut to homescreen? I did at least reorder the toggles so that it shows without having to pull them all down.

Bixby can turn it on and off for you. If you customize, it can be as easy as holding down the Bixby button and saying "light".

it's in your app drawer and you can just drag the icon from the drawer to your home screen if you need to use it a lot. I do that when we have power outages here. otherwise I like it in the not panel

I do not have it in my app drawer. It's only in the toggles at the top.

I switched from a Motorola Droid Turbo 2 and liked the shake to activate flashlight so I installed Shake Flashlight by AndroidRock and really like it. maybe give it a try.

Alternatively, "Ok Google, turn on the flashlight".

LOL, if I don't want to speak to Bixby, I don't want to speak to Google either. I guess I should have specifed that in my original post, too.

Maybe it will help someone else who does use the verbal commands, though.

And you can totally rearrange the icons in the notification shade pull down. 3dots menu

I used to always have a widget for a flashlight on my home screen, but the quick toggle is faster, don't need to unlock the phone to enable it and no need to return to the home screen when doing something.

I used the bxActions app to assign the built in flashlight to the Bixby button.

The edge panel with the compass has a flash light built in, you can even click a few times to make it bright and brighter.
