Samsung has hidden app optimization for awhile now if you tap Doze in the setting u can get access to all apps which is pretty cool

I keep it simple on my cover screen I do use a couple of the regular stock apps that you can add for shortcuts.. I just like to quick peek on anything if I need to open the phone and act on it and I've used the flashlight with the phone close a few times as well came in handy with my bad eyes and no light conditions...

I do like to tap on my AOD lol

I use the tim Hortons app on my cover screen to scan the points card.works amazing without needing to open my phone.
