Flip cover and swipe to unlock security screen

I have one of those magnetic flip cover cases. I used to be able to open the flip cover which would take me to the "no frills" swipe to unlock screen. But now when I open the cover it just takes me straight back into whatever previous app state bypassing the lock screen... It all works properly when pin/pattern/password number security is setup, however, selecting basic lock screen just wakes the phone back into previous state WITHOUT the actual lock screen. Anybody else with flip cover case experienced this issue?
