Formatting SD Card

While I wait patiently (yeah, right) for my Inc to arrive, I'm trying to learn as much as possible so I can hit the ground running when and if FedEx ever shows up.

I know some folks say they just took their SD card straight from their Berry and inserted it and it worked. However, most devices suggest it is better to format the card inside the device.

I see nothing at all in the User Guide that discusses formatting a SD card. Can it be done on the phone or do you have to do it on the PC?

It can be done on the phone.

Settings > SD card & phone storage > If your card is mounted, select "Unmount SD card" > Then select Format SD card. Voila!

Thanks. Don't know why it isn't in the Guide. Or, maybe I just missed it.

I didn't format mine at all. I just took it out of my Blackberry and put it in my Incredible. All of my pictures and whatnot have been working fine...with the exception of one incident where the phone wasn't recognizing my card. I just re-started my phone and it has been working fine ever since.

Is it bad that I haven't formatted it?

I backed up the card from my bb and formatted it in the Inc as soon as I put it in. What I found odd was that the format didn't erase any of the data on the card, which is what a format does.

I would say that if youre not having problems with the card from your bb, leave it as is.

I don't even really know what it means to format the card. I just went to settings>>SD & Phone storage.....and I see the format option reads "Format (erase) the SD Card."

I definitely don't want to erase it.

that is what formatting means, it will wipe the card clean.

some people like to format since it will clean up any extra unneeded information that was brought over from their blackberry.

@Mitch, are you sure you formatted the sd card and not the phone's internal storage?
