Former Note 7 owner having trouble upgrading to S8+ (Verizon)

Hey guys,

I wanted to see if any other former Note 7 owners are in the same boat as me with Verizon.

I was a Note 7 pre-orderer that had to turn in my Note 7 (for the 2nd time) in October during the final recall. After considering several phones I decided to go with (downgrade) to an S7 Edge, but only after confirming with Verizon via chat (which I saved in screenshots) that I could get out of the S7 with the annual upgrade - pay off 50% of the phone, so I could not be stuck for 2 years with a phone I didn't want and so I could go to the S8 or Note 8 when they came out.

So I went to my Verizon store this weekend intending to payoff my 50% (around $150) so I could get into an S8+, but Verizon wouldn't do the 50%, saying in the system it shows full 24 month payoff, even though I have documentation confirming 50% payoff.

My question for you Verizon Note 7 owners is if you leased another phone after the N7, were you able to get out of whatever phone you got with 50% payoff?

When pre-orders came up, the Verizon website allowed me to payoff my iPhone 7+ and get the S8+. But, I ultimately decided to just buy the S8+ outright from Samsung.com then I sold my iPhone 7+ myself.

I dont think vz even does the 50% option anymore.. I think its more around 75 or 80% from my last few upgrades. Now if it was something special they did in mist of the note 7 fiasco then I'd ask to speak to someone higher in authority or threaten to leave on account of them not wanting to make good on that documentation you have. See where there gets you.

Call in and talk to a phone rep, they are clueless at times, but they will do more for you in this area then any store will, specially if you have documentation.

Never trust Verizon. Ever. That's why I take my Verizon business to Best Buy. There might be other options aside from Best Buy but stay clear of a Verizon retail establishments or reps in general.

Release date S7/ S7 edge was annual upgrade promotion. Along with the current S8 S8+ it's 50% paid to upgrade. You only get this deal if you buy within the first month of release.

They just don't know what they're talking about. It shouldn't matter how long it's been, you just need to pay off half.

BTW, screenshots will do you no good with Verizon. I been there, done that, with three different conversations with three different reps. All they care about is making a sale and getting onto the next sucker.

They'll say anything, even flat out lie, just to get you to order.

If it weren't for where I work, I wouldn't have Verizon.

I would NEVER let Best Buy touch my Verizon account, those guys are clueless and mess up accounts and lie on a regular basis. (At least my local Best Buy). I say that as a former Verizon rep that had to fix their screw ups on a regular basis.

If the rep doesn't do it, just document then file a complaint with state attorney general, bbb, and Verizon executive Relations.

Also submit a notice of dispute per the customer agreement, and if they don't agree then go through arbitration. Per the customer agreement, Verizon would be responsible for all arbitration costs since the value is low.

Paid the upgrade free (AT&T) Next program of $231 plus tax on the S8+ for a total of $307. Had the Note 7 and settled for a S7 Edge when I turned mine in also. Worth every penny. I would complain to Verizon Corporate.

Honestly If you signed a payment contract for the s7 you should have known they would stick to that arrangement. You did sign a contract to pay the phone for 24 months. Although I am almost certain it is a payoff of 50% to upgrade. I know on my plan it definitely a 50% payoff. Does that vary plan by plan?

Update: it is a 50% payoff, at least on my plan.

I could have sworn I saw something similar to this a few weeks ago and now its not there and is showing total payoff to upgrade early.
Also when I "downgraded" from the Note 7 and agreed to get the S7 Edge it was only after I had a discussion and specifically asked that if I got the S7 Edge as a temporary phone I could upgrade with 50% payoff and I was assured that I could.
Now they are saying the S7Edge does not "show up" as 50% updgrade.

So when the Note 8 comes out we would be able to upgrade with only 50% payoff of our S7 Edge (or probably any phone?) as long as we upgrade within the first month the new phone is released?

So, if we wanted to get the Note 8 we could upgrade the S7 Edge (or whatever Note 7 replacement) with only 50% payoff as long as we ordered within the first month of Note 8 release?

A few years ago, having been with them for 15 years, when Verizon wouldn't let me upgrade a month early after my old phone broke, i walked out, went to T-Mobile and left their store with the note edge, a lower monthly payment, and a pleasant customer experience. I upgrade every year with their jump program, which is also the insurance plan, and get free stuff every week. There are places my phone doesn't get a good signal, but i don't spend much time in those places, and the difference in customer service makes up for it. If Verizon won't honor the agreement they made with you, T-Mobile will be happy to pay off whatever contract you're stuck in, take your old phone and give you the one you want.

Btw, I'm not a T-Mobile employee.
