Forums Maintenance September 8th & 9th

In your screenshot above, all of your message icons are grey. If there are new posts in a thread the icon changes to blue, and yes the hyperlink should also be bold. Cookies must be enabled for this feature to work.

Please verify that your icons always display as grey, and that your browser is accepting cookies from the forums.

To further troubleshoot, please post the version of IE you are using. The current version of the forums software does not support IE7 or lower.

I would advise IE9 if they are using IE. The site always caused errors in IE8 but IE9 was fine.

Good point Nigel.

BTW, jean15paul I just noticed the title of your IE browser is customized. Assuming it was provided by work, and if so did they customize anything else in the browser?

Hopefully this helps. Basically, when you post a link (say I post a link to google.com), there are two fields: The first is where the link leads to, the second is what the user clicks on. The second field used to be highlighted and the cursor was moved to this highlighted field so that the poster could simply start typing what they wanted the link to beView attachment 37852

Edit: Noticed a reason for the "Post Merged" feature. A new member posted three times in a row that the DL link, but the posts got merged. Thumbs up for the addition!

Once you submit and reload, it will have the title captured from the webpage

You're right it is provided by work, and I'm not sure what they customized or how I'd go about finding out. It is IE8 though.

Sorry, I should have posted more screenshots. The one you're referring to was posted to show the lack of a "next page" link in the "My Threads" search. The blue/grey and bold/unbold works fine for me in the "My Threads" search. Those messages were just all read.

My comment about not being able to tell the read threads from the threads with unread replies was about the "My Posts" page. Referrence the 2 screenshots below. The first is my "Subscriptions", notice that some messages are blue and bold (unread replies) and some are grey and not bold (read). The second screenshot is the "My Posts" search. It contains almost all of the same threads. But there appears to be no difference between the read threads and the unread threads.

Cool upgrade, from the looks of things though you'll never want to update to vBulletin 5 Connect

I spent 2 days trying to get it installed on my test server and all I can get is a white screen. Regardless, I think another upgrade would put me in a grave.

I believe it's always been this way. I will need to check my 3.8.7 server.

I used to use the mobile version of the forums daily. I now use only as a last resort. I appreciate the added features and options but they have come at a great cost to usability. I have a Galaxy S3 and the pages are horrible slow in response and loading times. The main page of the forums is forever long when scrolling. Used to be able to browse these pages over any connection available, now it darn well better be high speed or forget it. Sorry to complain, but I felt you should know that I have all but stopped using the mobile version of the forums since the update.

Did you ever get to check?

vBulletin5 connect is still in beta form. I doubt it will be fully featured and stable for another 8 -12 months at least. vBulletin 4 is now stable, so kudos to AC for updating.

If you scroll down to the bottom left of the page, and choose AC Mobile BETA from the pull-down, it will display what we had before with a dark theme. Sometime today, it will become our default mobile style.

The difference between the old and the new, is that the old displayed the thread title in bold & the post title in normal font. The new one does the exact opposite. There never was a function that changed from bold to normal based on whether there was a new post to the thread or not.

New question. What happen to the "News Tip" button? Didn't there used to be a button on each post that allowed it to be emailed to Phil & co if it was a news tip? I can't find it. Is it gone, or am I just missing something?

I seem to recall there being talks of it going away. Sounded like no on really used it. I sure didn't. It was back when we were asked if we used Multi Quote and News Tip. I think it was overwhelmingly stated that no one used News Tip, but, people seemed to like Multi Quote. Does that ring a bell?

News Tip in vB4 requires a rewrite of the code we were using and was put lower down on the priority list.

I'd use it occasionally because after the last update to the blog, the News Tip/Contact Us link was gone from the blog. I assumed that was on purpose, but maybe not. So if I wanted to send a news tip to the staff, I'd do it through the forum "News Tip". It doesn't come up often for me, but every once in awhile.

So if we have a news tip that we want to get to the AC staff, what's the right way to do it? Email them directly?

Edit: IMO, it would be good to have a "News Tip/Contact Us" link on the blog, but it doesn't seem necessary to have it on the forum too.
