EVO Full Root|Recovery|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing for n00b's Instructions & Videos - PPCGeeks

I'm a super noob at all of this rooting stuff and I came across this well written write up where things were explained so well that I'm almost ready to jump on the bandwagon!

Can any of you super hackers confirm that this jives with current android central processes for full root? I just want to make sure that if I follow these instructions, I'll still be "on the same page" when things come up on here!

My intentions are to get all of this done, buy rom manager, and flash happily off into the sunset! I'm planning on using the RvU primarily though.

liquidjesus, I saw that as well..... The only scary part with that is troubleshooting could be a bear if something goes haywire in the middle! Plus the thread on here doesn't have rave results as of yet.... I will be interested to hear your experience with simpleroot though!

I kind of want to feel like a wannabe hacker and do it the standard way.

[YES!] Rooted phone
[YES! ] Unlock Nand (so far so good)
[YES! ] Flash Recovery ( I may not do this because i like clockwork's )

Easiest thing i have done. he finished updating all his code, so its not glitch y like before. its 11:20 my time now original post was at 11. and i'm flashing my backed up nandroid right now. All in all, root to unroot, to rooted again in under an hour. Enjoy.

Ok, major problems on the the home-stretch!

I got to the last step, unlocking nand and all that hooplah. At first it wouldn't let me do a Nand Backup, so I crossed over to the android central stickie and did the rom manager/clockwork mod backup after getting things back to normal.......

Fine right? No! I downloaded the required stuff to use androidcentral's sdk methods... but I can't get into the command prompt! It flashes a bunch of stuff for a millisecond and closes, ugh!

So I go back to the original method as posted in this thread. I successfully make another nandroid backup of rvu132 with all my apps and settings the way I want em.... goood right? no!

So I try to download the 4 files needed to finish up. This guy says to put the flash_image and mtd-eng on the root of the sd after unzipping them.... well they aren't zip files according to my computer.... It says I have EFW files... I believe I renamed the files properly, but in the end, they weren't zip files that got unzipped per instructions

So that's my hangup. I can't use the supplied code to get me out of this debacle because the files seem to be effed up. liquidjesus save me!

Its ok, happens to the best of it. Without seeing your evo, its difficult for me to see whats going wrong when your entering the codes. Some one like the OP of that thread, Beezy420 of Ruffles are much better at code mind reading than i am.

However. To return you back to stock and offer you a chance to try again

http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/18953-cant-unroot.html

take a look at that thread, restore it from the RUU, then try again. ~ or use the 1...2...3 method above.

Sorry i cant be of more help.

Could I possibly use just the unlock nand from the simpleroot??????

Its worth a shot, but it could also make things go terribly wrong.

Do you have root?

in the adb do you get a "#"

if yes, than give it a shot. if no, your SOL untill you restore.

[edit] i just skimmed through that post again. It can see where its slightly confrustrating....

use this instead, this is how i rooted my first time. as well as many other people. and it should give you the experience your looking for also.

yes, I have root.... I've been using the run window (windows+r) because I can't get into the sdk version of command lines.... I'd probably be done if I had that! lol

I guess I'll give only the unlock nand button a whirl and see if I can make magic happen!

I have another idea!!!! in simpleroot's program, I see all 4 of the required files I need and they don't look messed up! I'll try stealing them first!

That was painful..... I ended up going to stock(ish) doing the quick 123 setup.... then proceeded to fight clockwork for control over flashing roms! For some reason I couldn't get it to flash with clockwork, so I went back to the standard windows.bat thing and then had a half yellow...half green screen.... managed to get my wipes and then got rvu132 back on!

All I know is it was not good policy to try and mix/match procedures! Hopefully, any future flashes will go much smoother through rom manager now!

Congrats! welcome aboard. I would advise you to use the other method i mentioned if you are ever feeling adventurous. Its sticked in these forums for easy findings =)

Thanks for the help! I would have gone with the stickied method if I could have gotten that sdk program to function.... that was the main hangup for me.

Either way, I think I have it all good to go now with rvu1.32 and the updated radio, along with the paid version of Rom manager. I've also made a nandroid backup as well as backed up the current Rom through the manager (which might be the exact same thing, just being safe I guess)

One more quickie question..... When I put rvu back on after the full root, I lost some of those neat new tools in the app launcher such as hdmi controller, wimax controller, etc... is this normal?

hmmm, i cant say i remember those features ever being there. Are they still under settings?

Just checked, all those things I was talking about arent in settings either.

I'm not too worried though, if you don't have em, then I didn't mess up any more in my quest for total phone control today!
