When you have the call history open... it's pretty obvious that you tap any name to see the history for that contact only... BUT, if you swipe to the right on any contact.. it gives a quick menu for calling or messaging .. even for numbers which are not assigned in your address book.
it also works on the regular contacts list.. I always wondered what the point of assigning "default" phone number if it never seemed to give you a direct dial from the contact list..
