franco Kernel Question

So i just rooted my N4 for the first time and i flashed Franco kernels but i noticed i cant change my screens brightness from the regular settings or even my widgets. Does anyone else have this problem? And also is there a way to go back to stock kernel? I dont think i did a backup of stock kernel. Thanks for the replies

Not sure about your brightness issue but for restoring the stock kernel you can flash the boot.img from your bootloader using fastboot.

If you need more instruction on this just ask and I can get someone on it to help you out with the steps.

Which kernel version are you running? I have r97 nightly installed and I have no issues adjusting brightness. I am running on the stock ROM if that matters.

I have r72. How do i get the 97? Im also on stock rom. Im a noob when it comes to rooting but i been hearing that rooting is the way to go so i couldnt resist. Not being able to change my brightness is a problem when im outside, i cant see my screen. Also any tips on what i can specifically when im rooted? I oonly really rooted so i can calibrate my screen and saturate the colors a bit but other than that idk what other "cool" things i can do while rooted, any tips?

The latest nightlies should be available in the xda developer thread for the Franco kernel. That being said, I downloaded the Franco kendal updater app from play store ($5) which is a little pricey but worthwhile because the app will flash the kernel for you and you can backup piteous kennels before flashing over in case you have problems like this.

I have the paid franco kernel app but the latest nightly is showing me is the r72. I feel like its a bit buggy though like ive said. Sorry if im being such a noob with this lol. I appreciate the response though, i dont usually post of forums but this has been a quick pleasant experience

That's odd that is showing a different version. Your other option is to use ADB/fastboot to flash the stock kernel back. If you're new to all this that can seem intimidating but if you take your time and read some guides is pretty easy.

Something is wrong with what you have, as it should be showing r97. I would uninstall the Franco app, reboot your phone, then download it again and see what the latest nightly shows up as. Something beside Franco is likely messing with your brightness. I ran r72 and it was not buggy in the slightest. Have you downloaded any other apps that control your screen brightness or any type of battery saver apps (like juice defender)? If so, try uninstalling those as well.

As far as being rooted are concerned, there aren't really any greater/unbelievable levels of fun it creates for your phone. For me, I do it for two main reasons...1 - I can run Titanium Backup so that data from my downloaded apps gets backed up. 2 - To run custom ROMs like Jellybros version of CM, or AOKP (or a bunch of others... [Directory] MAKO: ROMs & Kernels - xda-developers). Many of these ROMs give you the overall pure android experience, but add in a number of customizations that appeal to users, like easily customized toggles, as well as some bug fixes that the ROM devs can fix faster than Google does. If you're interested, go to youtube and search "custom rom for nexus 4" and you can watch some videos that show both how to flash them, as well as what they do for your phone.

r72 *might* have been the last one compatible with 4.2.1, so if you are not running Android 4.2.2 for some reason, the app won't show 4.2.2 kernels to prevent you from installing something incompatible and bootlooping.

This is true. Franco Kernel development for 4.2.1 stopped at r72. To get a later kernel you will need to be on Android 4.2.2.

That might be it. I never upgraded to 4.2.2 i wanted to keep the hidden LTE just so i can try it out on tmobile when it comes to nyc. And i have francos other screen display app but i am going to uninstall and reboot and see if that fixes my screen brightness issue

I have a big problem now. I unstalled francos nexus display control and rebooted. And when it turned back on it sent me to a setup screen and now my apps are messed up. My nova launcher was totAlly disconfigured. And all my paidapps are gone and when i try to redownload them from the playstore i get an error. Everything seems messed up now. Any ideas?

Erm... I would just do a factory reset. Going to be a pain, but after you set things up get Titanium Backup or some other backup app so you can back these things up for easy restoration in the future. Also going forward always make a nandroid backup in recovery before you flash anything or start tweaking things using root access. That way you can quickly and easily restore if you screw something up. For less experienced users backups are key to living headache free.

If you softbricked (you really can't "brick" a Nexus), then yes just follow the Factory Image Restore Guide. It will get your device back to brand new, out of the box condition. It will wipe the entire device though, sdcard partition included, so anything that you don't have backed up to the cloud or computer will be erased.

I soft bricked mine too. I diligently followed 2Def's step-by-step factory image restore guide and revived my phone. Make sure at the end to lock and unlock the bootloader. Many people had issues when they skipped that final step.

You've had some trouble for sure, but try not to let it discourage you from tinkering. You're just going through the hard knocks that we all experience at the beginning. Flashing this stuff is not rocket science, but it is specific, like a recipe for cooking...you've got to follow all the steps, in the correct order. If you do that, you'll have no problems. It's likely that you forgot to wipe the device (from recovery), or for got to flash the gapps file after flashing the ROM...something like that. This thread from the Galaxy Nexus is where I learned (http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...backup-restore-install-roms-galaxy-nexus.html). It covers all the basics. Flashing stuff is fun and it keeps your device fresh, so you're not always jonesing for a new phone.

Quick question hoping someone can help. I've downloaded Franco's app and it features his kernel's boot image. Is there any way to keep the app, but revert to the stock "x" boot image? If you know a way to do this, please include instructions a noob would understand. Ie; step by step etc. Thanks for your help.

I believe all you have to do is re-flash the factory boot.img in fastboot. But then the app becomes kind of useless as you won't be able to tweak all the available settings.
