When you take your DI overseas, say, Germany, you want to be connected with your friends & family in USA, right?
Since, Fring, disabled their Skype add-on because of Iphone 4G users overhauled Fring's servers with video broadcasts (the only reason I keep Fring for video chat in DI), Fring comes very useful because it has a "SIP" add-on.
You do not have to go thru very complicated settings like sipsourcery & sipdroid & pbx on your DI, Fring's "SIP" add-on has it all !
Things, you need:
Wifi--->Google Voice--->Gizmo5--->Fring with "SIP" add-on for Gizmo5 = free in & out bound calls over Wifi !!!
* People in the USA will dial your local Google Voice number
* You, in Germany, will go to Google Voice Browser and dial out your friend's USA number, GV dials it, then Fring rings, you pick up and then you are connected to your friend's/relative's number in USA.
Who said that " free cheese " is only in the mouse trap ? :)
* ask someone to give you a GV invite
* buy Gizmo5 account on E-bay or google any for sale

You don't need a invite anymore you can get it from Google for free,or download app from the Market,so no more waiting for a Invite.

this is very interesting indeed. Do I need to have a Google Voice number, or can I just use Google Voice with my existing cell phone number (this is how I currently have it set up).

Also, do you have to dial from the Google Voice browser? Can't you just set your phone to automatically use Google Voice for international calls?

Thanks for any additional help and info. I am going to Brazil next month and have been trying to figure out how to stay connected without roaming.

Yes, you have to dial out from the browser, and forward you GV to your Gizmo5(as forwarding phone), forget your normal ( say, Verizon phone number :)

ok... i'm still a bit confused about the order in which everything works together...

so, I forward my GV number to my Gizmo5 number (which I don't have yet). When people call my GV number, it will forward to Gizmo5, and then I answer using Fring? is that correct?

For outbound calls, I just dial from the GV browser? I still don't understand why I can't just use the GV app... but oh well!

thank you for helping out a newbie!

Yes & Yes & and because you cannot use Google Voice forwarded to German number, GV must be forwarded to American Number

Yes you can, sipgate website should have sipgate's Proxy's IP address, your id & sipgate's password: all these things you put into fring's " SIP" add-on.

Seems this would work for dialing into the US, but what about if you are in the US and want to make free international calls...is there a way to do that?

Went to the gizmo5 website and saw this...
Gizmo5 Has Been Acquired by Google

New user signup has been suspended and will return when we re-launch. To receive information about the re-launch please enter your email address.

I'm guessing they will be rolling this into google voice

There is no way to do a free international call ( call from usa to germany ), unless in germany, the person is on american Skype, or Skype with USA, Canada subscription, or using gizmo5+fring with sip add-on
