I noticed there's a free trial of VZ Navigator for the Thunderbolt. I'm not sure if you have to opt out or in after the month is up. Anyone know?

I love Google Navigation and it's free. But I've been a fan of VZ Navigator for 6 years, since my dumb phone days. It's the reason I initially switched to VZW.

Anyone using VS Nav? How is it?

Not sure why I'd pay for anything that is free... so no, I prefer Google Navigation.

I don't think it's free. It's free to download, but I believe you need to subscribe to the service.

After you download it, open it and there is an option for a free month trial. The other price points are there too. I chose the free month trial.

It took me like 3 months to stop getting charged for it with my last phone after the "free" trial. I'll just keep it off. Google nav is just fine for me.

I signed up for Verizon Navigation since the first day I got my Thunderbolt on release date. I'm paying $9.99 monthly for this service. I'm not aware of any free trial. Verizon Navigation positively has more and better features versus the free Google Navigation which I also use too. I downloaded the "free" 3D maps for Verizon Navigation, and now when I'm close to freeway junctions, I see billboard signs show up on my Bolt which matches the same freeway signs coming up...very cool ! Also, Verizon Navigation provides lane change assistance too which Google Navigation doesn't. I'm pretty sure Verizon Nav also has alerts for traffic jams too. What I don't like about Verizon Nav is that the highest volume for voice directions seems too low, whereas Google Navigation is actually louder...weird. Also, sometimes Verizon Nav seems to have problems finding an address, whereas Google Navigation will find it instead...again, weird. Other times, if Verizon Nav is having a problem getting a GPS fix, Google Navigation will get the fix instead. Or other times, it's vice-versa! Again, very weird. I even use GPS Status, and GPS Fix, but still encounter problems sometimes with both navigation apps. Again...weird!! I would say that Google Navigation works quite well most of the time, especially since it's free. I find that Google Navigation seems a little bit stripped down in terms of features as compared to Verizon Nav, but then again, Google Navigation is free whereas Verizon Nav is $9.99 monthly. At some point in time, I will make a determination whether to keep paying for Verizon Nav, or not. For now, I am alternately using both navigation apps. By the way, one of my favorite apps is called "Places" which finds my favorites places, such as Walgreens, Safeway, Trader Joe's, Pizza, Bars, etc. When I click on Navigation within the Places app, it automatically goes to Google Navigation app for providing GPS directions, as opposed to Verizon Navigation. This explains all the times I use Google Navigation instead of Verizon Navigation!

Meh, I used VZNav the whole time I was using BlackBerries. Honestly, I think it was the best option for the BB's, but once I tried Google Nav, VZNav seemed like a waste, so I dropped it like a hot tater. Maybe if I were getting it free I would have kept it, but for $10 it didn't offer anything extra that I need. Plus...

Google Nav works correctly with my BT car stereo so it plays the directions through my speakers. I could never get VZNav instructions to come through my stereo.
.
Google Nav loads much faster and is quicker to navigate through.

So, VZNav isn't bad, IMO, just not worth $10 per month. Free though? You can always cancel it later...

I used VZ navigator when I had LG Voyager. Switched to Telenav on BlackBerry Storm 1 + 2. Both cost the same but I liked Telenav's UI and functionalities much better.

Now that I am on android devices, I use Google Nav (FREE is good but wish there were more options) and as a back up I use Co-Pilot Live USA primarily because it is good and cheap (it's like $5 or 4-something for the USA version). Co-pilot has downloadable maps. So I can still use it even when I lose network connection.

I have also tried NDrive in the past as well as Destinator and Aura Sygic. All are expensive (I used either free trials or .. you know what). I kinda liked Aura Sygic as it kinda "syncs" with the posted speed limit on the road and alerts me if I go over. And it has the best UI. NDrive also has the speed limit thingy but it detects the speed limits in Miles but changes the unit to metric (it just changes the unit does not convert, like a speed limit of 40mph is read by the app as 40kmph and then coverts it to miles - 24mph ... and tells me I am speeding if I go over 24!)

One of the many reasons I wouldn't even try it.

You can get CoPilot for a one time $5 price. It loads the maps onto your SD card. It works fine, even if you are in a location without cell coverage. VZnav can't do that.

Copilot also updates maps every quarter. And if there is an error in the maps, we can send the feedback and they say they will make corrections (I haven't tried that so I don't if they really do that).

I used to use the Verizon Navigation with my Blackberry because there was no other option. I use GPS a lot and one of the first things I did when I got my Incredible was to cancel out the VZW. Why pay for something when Google Voice Nav is just as good. I like the Google and being free is great.

Chrisy, after your 30 day trial, you will need to call Verizon to cancel it out. If you don't, the charges will continue.

I am glad there is an option for free navigation. I have been unemployed now for a quite awhile so to have a savings right now for me is very important. I also think it is throwing money away when you can have a decent service for free. Like I said, I have used both and I really like the Google.
It is also too bad that Verizon can't offer it FREE permanently to their smartphone users. Sprint has one similar and it is free to their customers. But like I said, we have Google............save your money.

Its Android, write your own... ;-)

You might look at apps using wikiSPEEDia.org
Its an open database of speed limits.

Apps like "Back Seat Driver".
