Good question. 
People don't often remember (and I would even say "need") to update. They've got the game they choose and most people don't care much about having the latest version.
Newer Android versions have reminders but older models don't and even with the reminder to update, people either don't bother updating 10 apps at once or they auto-update all apps. Takes too much time.
By putting a button in the game, people who don't update are reminded when they play.
You get a better update rate.
