From Incredible-> Fascinate-> Droid X : A Comparison Review.....

the fascinate has the super amoled screen and slightly better processor and gpu but the difference isn't that noticeable compared with the x. I would rather have the extra memory for app storage. and the battery life on 2.2 is great. I can go over a day easily without worrying about battery life.

droid x+ 2.2 + launcher pro = smoothest and best phone on Verizon imo. it ties up with the fascinate from my experience.

I'll tell you what.....fix the GPS and microphone issues, release Froyo with bug fixes on the Fascinate, and I'll put it right up there too. But with the problems it has, it's just not there yet.

I also don't understand what some talk about in regards to gaming, I'm truly curious. Does Droid just process it slower leading to juttering, or slower gameplay vs Fascinate? Mind you the only games I play for Fieldgoal, Paper Toss, and Bejeweled, but I also tried NFS Shift on both, and they both played fine with no issues.

I currently went through the long drawn out drama between the fascinate and droid x. I was very torn between the two. So I finally decided to go with the Fascinate. Its a very nice phone. Here are things I do not like about it thus far after owning it for 4 days.

Didn't Like:
Very slippery. I have big hands and a well proportioned individual I am very afraid to drop it. I like my phones "naked" meaning I do not like those bulky protectors. The back cover.. very thin plastic and easy to scratch.

The button on the side. when i press that to turn on the screen it will almost slip out of my hand. Yes I know again with the slippery. But it is.

Liked: The screen of course. its very nice and the gorilla glass is nice.

Of course I like the over all phone but I am still well within my 30 days.

I was recently at a party and a person had a droid X. this person loved their phone. I showed them mine and they loved the screen but still loved their droid x.

I asked to hold it and try it out and I agreed I liked the way it felt in my hand. It was nice It gave me a feeling of durability. The screen on the fascinate was a head of that droid x screen but the droid x was still no slouch. I liked the feeling of the screen on the fascinate better as it had a better finger drag feeling to it.

Anyhow only 4 days. I only installed a few apps. But when I went into the store to handle both phones - didnt really do it justice because of the security cables connected to them...

Soo-ooo saying that.. I may switch to the X. I am still within my 30 days and who knows perhaps a new release of soemthing will be out that I may draw to.

I have read where people switched the other way around. It really is about preference. but...

thoughts??

Am I high or did I drink bad kool-aid on my synopsis?

I switched to a droid x from a fascinate. Gave the fascinate to my wife.

Fascinate screen is way more vibrant. Deeper blacks, brighter colors. The droid x screen is bright, but the colors don't pop out like the fascinate, and the black levels are nowhere near as deep.

I like the larger feel and the rubberized accents of the droid x, the fascinate was too small and slippery feeling.

The droid x camera doesn't do low light pictures as well as the fascinate in my opinion. The fascinate seemed to take pretty decent indoor pictures, most of the ones I've taken with the X are slighty blurry.

The X seems more polished to me. I had significantly more hangs and freezes with the fascinate. I dint think I've had a single hang or freeze with the X to date. Maybe that will get better with time and Froyo updates on the fascinate.

I felt like I could swype better on the X than the fascinate. Maybe the slight screen size difference helps out in typing.

I have been on this forum lurking the DX vs SF debate (both here and in the SF forums), coming up to my 30 day limit. Yesterday, I made my decision: I swapped the SF for a DX. I was going back and forth between the two: form factor and vibrant screen of the SF, vs the working GPS and better call quality of the DX. What made it final was a long call with work on my SF. There was so much side tone that it was really annoying, either with blue tooth headset or not. It made it really difficult to have a conversation.

The second I got my DX, walked outside the Vzw store, brought up google maps, and it found my location in seconds! My SF used to hunt for minutes before getting a lock. I am one happy camper.

My wife still has her Fascinate (we bought via the BOGO offer) and it's a great phone, and definitely more pocket/purse friendly. Her SF didn't seem to have the same side tone issue (or as bad) as mine did, and she doesn't use too many of the smart phone features, so she's happy with the SF.

Back to my DX. Now I just have to figure out how to root to get rid of bloatware... :-)

I would agree that the call quality on the X is better than the fascinate as well.

I think the fascinate has the potential to be an excellent phone with some updates, but the X is an excellent phone today.

The only thing that has me really "worried" about the X is the lack of true custom roms and if/when they will ever be available.

Thanks for the review.
My experience:
I traded in my D2 for an X because there was a lag. The D2's keyboard was also too small.
The X is fufufu...fast!!! And we all know about the huge screen.
I could npt be happier with the switch.

I was afraid that upon seeing the Fascinate screen I'd develop screen envy, but after getting serious time with the Fascinate screen in both sunlight and darkness, I actually prefer the X screen. Brightness is about equal when both are turned to 100%, and colors look much more natural on the X. The Fascinate had an overly warm color, almost a yellow or orange tint to things. The extra size is also more apparent when holding them next to each other.

Thank you for this thread. I had the Incredible on launch day, great phone but I had it on 2.1 and sold it before 2.2. Came back and got the Fascinate, but it just doesn't seem to be 100% and I'm not a huge Samsung fan (Remeber the i700 PocketPC issues anyone?). So I am looking to return and get the Droid X, which I know there are a few quirks with but a much hailed fix is "coming soon" which better be soon Verizon.

I enjoy reading these forums that compare the X and the Fascinate.

I have both phones and switch back and forth. I see the posts about the specs for the Fascinate and how it should be a faster phone.

I think the Fascinate is a good phone but I don't agree that it is faster performance wise then the X.

I keep coming back to the X because I seem to have fewer issues with it. Typing seems easier. GPS for sure is faster and call quality and signal are head and shoulders better.

On Beautiful Widgets you can have your weather update via GPS and I would get errors with Fascinate not being able to get a signal but never the X.

I for one will be very curious to see if Froyo for the Samsung fixes call quality and GPS. I have my doubts as I have read forums about antenna issues with Samsung. With that said I have also read that a GPS fix will also fix the signal issues......

I think the posters who say for now the X is a better phone are accurate. If Samsung can fix the issues well then it will become a lot harder to find a clear winner.

I read plenty of inquiries pop up periodically asking about which one should they get. I have owned all 3 and am happy to throw out a little simple real world comparison review. If I miss anything, please feel free to add to it. I started with a Droid Incredible that I liked a lot, but after it updated to Froyo, I found too many bugs that were making the device more of an inconvenience than it should had been, particularly reboots. I then had one of my early upgrade dates moved up and purchased a Fascinate. Great phone, excellent in between alternative size-wise between the Incredible and the X, however, they released it a bit too early, as that also had bugs that affected the things I needed it to do which warrented a switch to the Droid X which as been a pleasure. So let me begin......

Droid Incredible.

The Good:

It is small and incredibly thin. Many complain of the battery life. To me, I need a device to last without a charge from around 8AM until I go to bed sometime between midnight and 2AM. It's standard OEM battery was not enough to get that. Usually I would get up until the end of the workday around 5, but it would be dead by around 7PM. I got an OEM HTC Ozone battery rated at 1500MHz and that got me where I needed it to be. This is considering heavier emailing and text, very light internet use, some GPS, and a few calls. We are all obviously familiar with Android. The Sense UI is fast and smooth, it flows very well and offers some great Widgets. The Camera takes great photos, and the screen shows those photos very well This is a great phone if you are looking for Android OS with a fast processor and like the look and feel of Sense. The Keyboard spellcheck is great too, I have large thumbs, typo's can easily happen, and this one was great at correcting those mistakes for the most part. When you need to navigate to a word to correct, you could move to the letter with the small thumb pad.

The Bad:

Then they released the Froyo update. To me at first it seemed like it added some great functions to an already great phone, but then all of a sudden at least 3 times a day it would randomly reset. I wouldn't had even minded the resets, except for the fact that it happened too many times while on a phone call. This is unacceptable, particularly that you have to wait for the phone to boot up to be able to call back. Using this for business, that is NOT good especially when you are flowing in a train of thought when this happens. The other thing that killed me was that the screen was completely unreadable when outdoors in a strong sun. Not just due to glare, the screen would be completely washed out. It's stunning indoors, but useless outside. The Camera is very vulnerable, you put the phone down on it's back, and the protuding lens is waiting to get scratched. Not a lot of accessories to choose from, no desktop dock, form fitting cases are limited due to the device height. The speakerphone was a mixed bag, you could hear the other party fine, but my voice regularly cut out. Another very annoying bug after the update would be while typing. If I was typing something fairly long, sometimes as I would be typing, it would suddenly type as if I touched the middle of the paragraph and disrupt as I would have to delete what was typed, and scroll back to the end and start typing again. Calendar also didn't allow for landscape input.

Samsung Fascinate:

The Good:

This device has a GREAT form factor. It is a nice in between if the Incredible is too small, and the Droid X is too large. The screen is crisp and vibrant and HEY, you could see it outside in the sun. The speed is overall snappy, and the battery life met my needs easily getting a full day out of it. TouchWiz makes makes Android extremely easy to work with, it gives off an iPhone look. I particularly liked the customizeable bottom dock, and the ability to add and remove screens. The camera took great photos, the speakerphone for the most part was nice and clear, and calls were perfect on the Bluetooth earpiece. The Keyboard was easy to type on, and you had the choice of the TouchWiz keyboard to Swype.

The Bad:

I really wanted to like this phone, but the bad spots were a bit too important. No Notification light, this was a BAD omission Samsung. You could use a software LED substitute, but it slowed down the phone for me, and it would regularly make me have to Force Close. As mentioned, speakerphone and bluetooth were good, and they had better been because using it as a regular phone was not a great experience. Any outside noise would make me hear my own voice in the earpiece, and it would make it sound like I'm talking into a fan. This was VERY annoying. GPS would take anywhere between 2 and 10 minutes to lock in so I never really felt comfortable using it for navigation. The Signal was never on par with what I normally get, it was consistently 1X on Data and 2 bars below other phones sometimes losing connection completely. And one of the most important issues which I cannot believe this was overlooked, the calendar. You have Phone Calendar which does not synch to anything, and of course Google Calendar which synchs it to my Google account. The Fascinate defaults to Phone Calendar, you cannot change the Default. So when going into New Event, you add your appointment, you have to make sure to tap it as a Google Calendar Event. If you saved it without making sure to save it as a Google Calendar Event, it would not let you edit and change it, you would have to delete the entire event and re-do it. If you wanted to set an appointment by long pressing the time on the calendar day, since the default was Phone Calendar, that event would not be backed up, and of course you could not edit to change that. That was what sent me over the edge and had me looking into the......

Droid X:

The Good:

The screen may not be AMOLED, but this screens LCD holds it's own. There is a lot of screen Real Estate to type on, swipe, or should I add, swype. Multi-Touch Keyboard, so you can hold shift while typing another letter. The size of the screen also makes for a more accurate touch experience.....have I mentioned it is a pleasure to type on? The phone is fantastic, the most clarity I have enjoyed on a Cell Phone since I switched from dumb phones to smart phones. 3 Noise Cancellation microphone create almost landline quality. The phone feels solid. Photos, video, and sound are excellent. And FROYO works great for me. Please keep in mind I upgraded before I restored everything from backup, to my understanding the update gets really buggy if you do not do it on an empty phone. There's a fix posted in a sticky on the forum you may want to read before you do the upgrade. Widgets are customizable. You can adjust the size. Camera is excellent for the most part and offers some great features that you would normally get in a standalone phone like the panoramic shooting. I have found what I am looking for.....an Android phone that just works.

The Bad:

Occasional lag, it is not as zippy as the other 2. The phone is big, not as compact, not sleek, it's got more of an industrial look and feel. When you put the phone on it's back on a cushion, or anything that may disrupt the speakerhole, the sound is non existent. Data occasionally requires a reset as sometimes it seems to freeze. Reading through the forums, it appears there will be a fix released for that, changing battery status to performance seems to had cleared it up. One other thing the browser doesn't do is reformat web pages to fit the screen when zooming in. It does on some, but not most.

I found that I could live with the bad points on the Droid X a lot easier then I could with the incredible and the fascinates shortcomings which became large problems from a business standpoint. The voice quality alone may make the Droid X a phone I could see myself holding onto throughout the next year minimum, aim curious to see what Motorola could do to top this.

I hope this serves as a good resource for those on ten fence with the three devices. Like anything, what works for one or is more forgivable could be a deal breaker Or the wrong device for someone else. Please feel free to share your experiences with these devices as I am sure I have missed some points.
I have also had the Fascinate for about three weeks and the force closes and lags are BIG issues. I believe I would be better off with a blood hound than relying on the GPS. It takes several minutes (up to 30) to lock and looses its GPS signal and drops calls constantly. Coming from a BB Tour, I spent months researching the different forums and sites that reviewed these phones and was stoked to get an Android phone that would actually work after the 2.2 update, and I now believe its time to move to the DroidX. I think I am going to miss the AMOLED screen and the Swype, but if I dont drop calls, it will be worth the switch.

Great thread....I recently settled on the DX giving up my INC mainly due to the size and my personal taste and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

What I really find to be great is no matter what your personal taste there seems to be a device that will suit you.

For me it was DX and for you it may be the INC, the SF or whatever hits the market next!

Happy to help...thanks for the good words :)

It's well over a month since I wrote this, and I still couldn't be happier with my Droid X. While I still look forward to the update to address the known issues, I have experienced minimal bugs with mine.

It's funny, when it was released, I really had no intention of purchasing it. I felt it was going to be too large. The size was very easy to get used to. I never rooted it, I never changed the themes. I don't use social networking widgets, if I want to check the status of something on facebook, I log in, check, and log out. I utilize all the space on every screen and really appreciate being able to resize the widgets. I tend to reset the device once a day just to refresh it.

The thing I appreciate most besides the stability is the battery life. During the week, I regularly text, email, and use the phone about 1-2 hours, but it gets charged during the day, so docking at night with minimum 80% battery is not accurate. However removing from the charger at 7-7:30am every morning, and without a charge until noon it is usually at 90% consistently. Sunday gets the heaviest use as I often utilize NFL Red Zone, and constantly refreshing scores on CBS Sportsline App. I text and email heavily and do about an hour of calls. At the end of the night I have minimum 60% battery, one time it went to 50%. Thats from around 8 or 9am until after midnight.

Last month I went to Jury Duty (augh) with my iPad and Droid X, and I had to go to New York City after that. Going back and forth all day with texts and emails, utilizing apps back and forth between the iPad and Droid X. I left the iPad in the car and took the train to the City, texting and emailing on the train, a couple calls when I got to the city, took some photos, used the internet and GPS. I was a little nervous about being mobile all day and not having a charger as I still have battery shell shock from the Incredible. My Droid X was a champ, I docked it that night with 50% battery that was 6AM all day until it docked at 1AM.

Battery Life is important on a mobile device, I shouldn't have to worry mid day if I am near a charger. A phone SHOULD perform like this, and I pat Motorola designers on the back for getting this right.

If you want the most top of the line phone on the market, even with all the new devices being released, the Pro, Continuum, and the lower end Motorola phones, this is still the Smartphone to get. :D I always have to make clear....the best for ME.

I really liked the reviews on all the phones that i am considering. Im on the tmobile vibrant in wich i am not happy with. I will never own a samsung phone after this again. I really like the droid x and will most likely get that hopefuly in january.

I've had all three phones as well for over a month a piece and I completely agree with the OPs conclusion. The X is still on the top of the Android Verizon food chain.

Thanks

Information is always appreciated by those who may have trepidation in complexities incurring significant monetary expenditures. :p

I fall into that category. I've considered the phones you've mentioned and your post makes the decision more than just the result of a coin flip.

Thanks

Great simple comparison in the real world from the OP! Kudos for the information and it is making my decision to go between the Galaxy Series, the Incredible, and the Droid X.

While I still like the way the Incredible's screen looks (from video reviews on Youtube and my brief 20 min playtime in the Verizon store) I had not had the chance to use it outside.

I may have to seriously consider the X again....good thing is that I have nothing but time to figure this out!!!!

Samsung is great at displays. They just don't know radios. Motorola has been doing radios for decades :)
