from VZW Pre Plus to Vigor or Prime?

I'm not sure what to do because I've lived in WebOS since day 1. I'm disappointed it's gone but am moving on, and can't decide if I should switch to the upcoming Vigor or Prime (or whatever VZW will be calling them). I'm impatient and had decided to go with the Vigor, but it looks like the Prime *might* not be too far behind. I waited forever for the Pre3 to come out and was going to get a TouchPad to accompany it and that never happened, so I figure I might be able to hold out another month, crossing fingers.

I could use your help in deciding since I've never had anything but a Palm and webOS! Vigor or Prime?

TIA

I'm going for the Vigor.
I waited for the Bionic, really liked the phone, hated the screen. Here we are another month later waiting on the Vigor. When this thing gets released I'm waiting no more.

The Prime looks good if it will have ICS, and no bloatware, which looks likely.

The specs between the Prime and the Vigor, are at least on paper, very similar.

But I still prefer HTC over Samsung.

I'm going with the Vigor simply by the fact that I have had HTC phones for about 10 years now, and they have ALWAYS treated me right. My wife has been through a slew of Samsung devices and she never really seems to like any of them. I dare you to try to get the HTC out of my hand...

You cannot go wrong with either. I personally want the Prime, total ICS with no bloat, a Samsung sAmoled + screen, LTE.....there is nothing but win there.

Oh and can we stop calling it a Samsung phone. They are the maker of the hardware but that is where it stops. The software and design is gonna be all Google like the others before it.

Saying it is a samsung phone is the same as saying the ford Taurus is actually a KIA because they put the motor together.

This is what I'm thinking...

I'm also a fan of HTC, but I have to say that my Incredible's camera lens cover came off after about a year. Verizon sent me a refurb and the lens eventually came off of that one too. I'm not sure how I could have prevented that, since I don't abuse my phone in any way. I'm not totally sold on the build quality on any of these phones. I'm also considering either the Vigor or the Prime when they come out. I'm going to make my decision based on price and screen size, and we don't have the final word on either yet. For me, the rest of the features will be too similar to use as comparison. I definitely want to go a little bit bigger than my Incredible, but only for a bit more keyboard space. I do think that as these phones get bigger, they start to lose the convenience factor and one rumor has the Prime coming out on the bigger side. Time will tell. Right now it's like making a decision in a vacuum.

I can't stop thinking of the Prime as a Samsung device.

In my mind, the company that builds the product is the manufacture.

Yes, they're made to Google's own specifications, and it's not going to be like any else out there.

It's like my HP computer, it runs Windows software but I don't think of it as a Window's computer, but rather a HP computer.

But I digress...

you should decide if you like sense or not. My gf had it, and being a current webOS user I didn't like it. I actually liked samsung's touchwiz, however that won't be on the prime...

Verizon pre 3's are popping up on ebay, my guess is more will start coming and the prices will drop. I'm considering switching from sprint just to have a pre 3, or franken pre as I have a pre 2 sitting here. But I also am very tempted by the gs2 (radios were a deal breaker for me) and will prob wait to see the prime before fully deciding. Not too much longer....

Still love webOS though, I'm having a difficult time saying goodbye to gestures, cards, and notifications...but the guy who helped design webOS is now working on ICS, which sounds like it will bring minor changes and the next version where will be the major make overs come.

I am kinda considering the Nexus device, but I am really hesitant for a couple of reasons.

First, everyone is assuming that it will have no bloatware, but show me a Verizon android phone that doesn't have some degree of it. I have this bad feeling that if Verizon is involved, it will have bloat and quite possibly a skin on it. In that case, aside from the spec upgrade and the newer OS out of the box, it won't be much better than getting a Charge.

What I keep going back to is how Verizon has handled Nexus devices in the past. Many will point out the OG Droid as the first such device (not in name but certainly in execution). The only difference between it and Nexus branded devices is the presence of bloatware. Next we have the Nexus1. It was supposed to come to Verizon but since it had almost identical specs to the OG Incredible, Verizon opted for that so they could basically add anything they wanted to it. After that was the NexusS, which Verizon completely passed on. All of this points to this upcoming device not being a true Google experience device. Bloat added for sure and possibly a skin as well.

As far as not calling it a Samsung phone, that's not really realistic. If it is a Nexus phone Google is simply tellng them what specs they want and posssibly what it's constructed out of. But, if someone doesn't like the construction of Samsung phones, they may not like this one either, unless Google addressed any of those issues specifically.

This is why I am strongly leaning towards the Vigor. I have tried out phones everytime I have gone to upgrade. The HTCs have always come out on top for me. While they don't necessarily win the quadrant tests, they seem to have less lag than the competition (at least when I have tried them all out in the store). I will take everday performance over bench tests that may only happen a few times a week. The other thing that most people point to when shooting down HTC is build quality. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I have never had a real issue with that. The ones that really make me chuckle is when they say the back cover squeaks off and on. Sure it may be annoying, but does it really affect the performance of the phone? If it really bothers you you could always go to a phone that has no chance of squeaking. Say one with no removable battery or ports other than to charge. Cough! i*hone Cough! I'll take the ability to change batteries, upgrade my storage, or ability to roam over a non squeaky phone without those options.

The release dates for both are aligned with each other or should I say aligned to collide with the iphone launch. Prime has a slight edge over Vigor because of ICS and future updates right out of the gate but the hardware should have similar specs. I think both phones are great, if leaked specs are true, you can't go wrong with either one.

Samsung/Google combo now has leverage with Verizon. The Prime will have the same amount of Verizon bloatware as iphone, zero.

Wait for news, reviews and hands on, get to the store and try out and ultimately make your decision then.

Thanks everyone for all the great info in helping me jump from webOS to either the Vigor or Prime. I am leaning towards the Vigor mostly because I'm not a patient person, and it sounds like the hardware will be similar.

Question: Will the Vigor get the ICS update ever? I'm so not familiar with anything but webOS. It seems like that and bloatware are the main differences between these two phones.

Haha... You sound like me, I'm done waiting for a phone. I waited on the Bionic-glad I passed on that one, being the screen was not so good, not a pentile fan. The Vigor's 720p should be great.

And yes the Vigor will get ICS, but I wouldn't expect to see it roll out until April or May, or whenever Verizon decides we can have it. I read that ICS is favoring the OMAP processors, so it will follow the Bionic in the upgrade cycle.

I haven't seen any dates released that the Vigor would get ICS but I'm guessing 1st QTR of next year, hopefully a custom rom much sooner if you decide to root.

So that's my next task when I have some free time (right): find out what all these terms are in this other world I'm going to be living in. ;) But it sounds like the 2 differences, the ICS update and bloatware, are not forever problems. If that's the case, I'm jumping on the Vigor the second it comes out, unless there is something waaaaay better on the Prime. I'm tired of waiting.

I'd expect the Vigor's first taste of ICS to be CM8. Considering the fact that ICS is supposed to be a "gamechanger", it could take a while for OEMs to put their skins over it. I'd say CM8 within a month or so, followed by leaked ICS Sense builds, with the official update... Sometimes next year.

I love Android, and I love HTC, but waiting that long for an official update is ridiculous. Oh well. Still prefer it to any alternatives.

If your torn between the two I would wait until October 11th when we find out more about the Prime, and should also know more about the Vigor which I think is launching first.

The big thing for me is the hardware. If the Prime is rocking the new Exynos 4212 processor with it's 'improved' gpu than I will be getting the Prime without hesitation. While the rumored Qualcomm processor with it's Audrino 220 GPU is amazing and clocked at 1.5 Ghz (again, rumor), if the Prime gets the new Exynos 4212 it will be faster and more energy efficient.

If the Prime is only using the old Exynos 4210 or the new TI OMAP 4460 than I would say the two phones are very very comparable. Personally I'm getting the Prime unless something major changes in the next 3 weeks.

Does anyone know what each of these phones will cost on contract?

It seems VZW has set a price of $299 on contract for their 4G phones, so far at least.

But there were grumblings awhile back online about the Vigor may break through that $300 barrier if it indeed has the Beats audio in-ear headphones.

Even with that said, I'm still thinking the Vigor and Prime will be $299 on contract.
