Functionality when we long press home button in nexus 6p

In Android mobiles,if we long press the home button present in bottom of the screen then it will show us the google search screen but In my Nexus 6P device, when i long press the home button the screen is getting turned off. i just want to know whether its a new functionality or its of defect.

I think it's new functionality for devices with damaged power buttons. If you grab home and slide it up though, it should do google search.
