Looking to get a new car by early next spring. I'm really interested in Android Auto but don't want to wait till it's fully available (in case of delays). Anyone know if the auto manufacturers will be able to add this via software/firmware updates or does it need special hardware to operate. I'm guessing a hardware retro fit will cost an arm and a leg... and a kidney.

I can tell you that there are already cars with Android auto installed. They are just not yet in full production. They will come out next year.

Google has been working on this program longer than you may think. I first used a head unit with it a couple of months ago and did not fully appreciate what I was looking at.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure I've read in recent articles that it needs hardware in the car to work.

I'm also hoping that it's an easy, on the fly transition from the vehicle's infotainment system to Android Auto. Would suck to have to connect and disconnect the USB every time to switch between the two.

So...... would it have wifi to update the OS?.....

car dealers would hate that though. It just makes sense, and it's easy for customers. Something dealers hate.

And whose in charge of the updates? Google or Manufacturer? With Google, you can get some decent support a few years later. Manufacturer? Bahahahhaa, they would love for the entire system to get cripped 2-3 years later so you can just buy a new car ;)

Hyundai has stated they will be doing an update for any 2015 Sonata customers.

Meaning cars that were already delivered without Android Auto?

That would be great!

Yes, that is my understanding of what I have read is that it will be compatible for an upgrade. They showed working versions of it at the recent Auto Show in LA. The salesman at my dealership had no idea what I was talking about though. You may have to engage Hyundai corporate or through social media but I am not Not sure if they are really giving out any information at this point.

Thanks for the info. I'm not a Hyundai owner but I'm intrigued by the idea of Android Auto and hoping that if Hyundai offers updates to integrate it in earlier models, then other car manufacturers will as well.

Android and iOS in the car have been coming too slowly, I had to buy a new car and unfortunately I doubt either will be supported (although there's no technical reasons why not, the current touch screen system has been demoed with Android before but I'm guessing they'll leave it for next year's model :/)
