G2 becoming intolerable and all but useless...

I've had this G2 for almost two years and was going to upgrade soon and go back to a Samsung device but my wife dropped her S4 the other day and broke the screen so now she needs the upgrade more than me. So, since I appear to be stuck with this G2 for a while longer, I thought I might see if there's anything I can do to make it somewhat tolerable. The problem with it is that it freezes up constantly, anywhere from a half a second to 8-10 seconds or more. It doesn't matter what I'm doing; texting, e-mail, any apps, changing between apps, simply changing pages, anything. It freezes up constantly. When I'm typing, it will freeze and make me think I didn't type the letter or number, so I will type it again, and again. Then after a few seconds it will suddenly type 3 or 4 of that letter or number. VERY frustrating. I have updated the thing whenever possible (I think the 5.XX "L" update actually made it worse), done multiple factory resets, removed apps, added apps, anything I could think of. I also took it out of the Otterbox for a few days to see if that was causing a problem with the touchscreen. No help at all. I went in and removed or turned off every app except the most essential ones to try and free up RAM. No help. Nothing I have tried has made it any better. In fact, it seems to be getting worse. I really need to make this thing work better for a while longer till I can replace it. Anyone have any suggestions at all?

Have you thought about rooting and going to a custom ROM?

Cm13 based ROM s seem less prone to lag have latest security and better battery in my experience.

I would also recommend cm13 if you don't care about camera performance ..degraded quality in low light and such. also resurrection remix is fine. btw since i had a g2 also and my sim card reader broke i thought about buying a new one so i have to ask . did these issues appear after 2 years or it was there all along but less frequent? Thanks in advance

They have been there pretty much all along as it's just now two years that I've had this G2. That being said, I bit the bullet, rooted and upgraded to CM13. All the issues I had before are GONE. No lag, no freezing, nothing. And, my camera seems to work fine although the app that runs it takes some getting use to. THAT being said, it does have some UI quirks that are a bit annoying but not terrible, except for one. I am missing a few icons that I had before that were very useful for me; just a couple menu things. No big deal. My double tap feature only works to turn the screen on. It won't turn it off. But the biggest problem is that when I have a good cell signal, instead of it saying 4G like it use to, it says "LTE". What does that mean? I know these phones are all 4G/LTE. But why did it change? And the reason I ask is that since this started, certain apps that I use allot (Pandora) won't work whenever the thing says LTE. Oddly enough, if the signal is somewhat degraded and it doesn't say LTE, Pandora works fine. So... What's the deal with this LTE thing? Why is it doing that now and what can I do to go back to 4G so my Pandora works?

@brettt777 Well first of all the double tap feature is from lg launcher so if you want that you can try nova launcher check the gestures and change double tap to screen lock that should work really good in my experience so that's that. as for the 4g/lte thing i always thought they were both connected but they're not. that said i don't know how to switch between them but check the settings maybe you could find something similar to how people switch between 2g and 3g but i'm not sure.

Mohamed Ahmed12, did you end up choosing the G2? Just ask because I agonized for a couple of weeks over upgrading my own G2, but wound up staying on it. It has behaved flawlessly for over 2 years, it's only lately that the LCD began to look jittery. I was comparing specs and available alternatives for me. I'm not at all a heavy camera user, I like a solid-feeling smaller phone with good outdoor visibility, removable battery, and I use navigation and Twitter most, probably. I should've gotten a screen replacement and replaced it myself, maybe. Well, I wound up getting it repaired at one of the local shops. It is back to running flawlessly. It cost me more to repair than I would really like but, not as much as a newer phone. And none of the newer phones I can find match up, for the overall cost. (I loved some of the Nexuses, but can't seem to find any for sale now, in condition and at a price I like. Not gonna pay $600 for a phone when its claims to fame are camera - that's not a Nikon or Canon -- and curvy edges (no offense to anyone for whom those are big must-haves). I just thought I'd say this phone's been terrific for a looong time.
