G4 - Both Better and Worse than Expected

Picked up my black leather pre-order at BB yesterday. Couple of surprises, particularly given the that I'd read every review possible b4 buying:

Better than expected:

- Camera and Camera Launch speed: Camera is better than expected (I've taken some incredible macros so far) and the ability to launch from a locked, screen-off, position by double-pressing the vol down key is incredible. This is the best camera and camera access I've ever seen on a phone, bar none. I read a review yesterday arguing that it takes "too long" to launch the camera on the g4 and that the S6 was superior in this regard. Hardly.

- Value: $99 on 2 year contract with a free extra battery, charger and 32gb sd card? Seriously? Hard to beat that. (The competition, for me, was either the S6 edge or the Note 4; both would have cost $200 more.)

- Lollipop 5.1. I appreciate the nuances and additions over my prior 4.42 kitkat phone (s4). Mutlti-tasking is better and the lock screen notifications are heaven sent; the overall look and feel of the OS is a clear step up.

- Black leather back is a nice touch - the phone looks beautiful when face down on a table or counter; the combination of the curved back and the leather really works nicely.

Worse than Expected:

Design. The plastic is as plasticy as it gets, possibly suitable for a 2013 flagship but not in 2015. But even worse, the back edges flare sharply OUTWARD, meaning that, when gripping the phone one-handed, the edges jab into your palm. I'd read repeatedly that the phone feels "good in the hand," but that's only true when you are holding it only by the sides. To use it one handed you must hold it at an angle, and that's where it gets uncomfortable. Ultimately, whoever decided to sharpen the edges (over, for example, the g3's design) and flare them outward should be flogged. An appalling decision that can only be mitigated by throwing a case on it. (And, I can also see why, when the G4 was announced by LG, one of their execs noted that a "more premium" LG device would be released in Q3/4 2015. In many sense, given the competition, the device is not on-par in terms of materials or, in some ways, ergonomics).

On-screen keys. Ok, so this is not a issue with the G4 specifically, but if you are coming from another phone (samsung, HTC), get ready for the world of "on-screen" buttons (home, back, recent). For ME, they are atrocious. There is no other way to put it. I think Android has really lost its way here: why would I pay for a 5.5" screen if the on-screen keys then consume a chunk of my screen? That's just cretinous. (I recall coming home with my old samsung s4 and finding that sammy's bloat took 7gb of my storage and thinking: how can they call it a 16gb phone when I only get 9 gb?? Same thing here - how can you call it a 5.5" screen when you don't get to use the whole screen??) Now of course I quickly discovered how to disable the on-screen buttons for any given app, but then what? Now, to use the buttons, I have to swipe up from the bottom of the screen (to initiate the on-screen buttons) and then punch the needed button. What should be a one-step process becomes a significantly longer and more cumbersome two-step process. Again, that's just idiotic. I can now fully appreciate why sammy, htc, hell even Apple, keep a hardware (or capacitive) button(s). No doubt I will eventually get accustomed to this (and I know some people prefer on-screen keys; everyone gets their opinion), but the fact is this: there is no LOGICAL argument that can demonstrate that on-screen buttons are somehow "better": if you use them, you lose precious screen real-estate; if you disabled them for an app, you are burdened with a cumbersome process every time you need to access them. It's a lose-lose situation.

As Expected:

LG's interface. It's so so. I played with it for a bit, but ultimately disabled as much of it as I could and dropped Nova Prime on - works great, especially after disabling the on-screen buttons for nova prime (yes, you can do that!) and being able to see the whole, gorgeous screen!

Screen is delicious, as advertised.

The title scared me as someone who should get theirs Monday...but your dislikes won't be an issue for me coming from g2 and g3....I'm stoked

Why did you get a phone with on screen buttons if you dislike them so much?

On your dislikes:

design: eh...doesn't bother me one bit.
on screen buttons: eh...your point has merit but not sure I care.

I am coming from a Note 3, that has the capacitive buttons. I can understand the argument from the OP, but for me anyhow, it isn't a big deal when wanting to use the whole screen, to swipe up and get the on screen buttons, seeing how that generally when you want to use the full screen, you will be in it for awhile (gaming, videos, other media). It really makes it a moot point.

My take on the G4, is that it is a phenomenal phone. MUCH better than the Note 3 I came from. The rounded back is a plus when holding it, but I can see the OP's point about the corners, although that hasn't really bothered me that much. For all that you get with this phone, and being that it is the "Jack-Of-All-Trades" phone, this will likely be the top phone of the year, or very near the top (still haven't seen the Note 5, the new Nexus, Moto offerings, etc).

Congrats on your purchase! There's always a downside or 2 with any phone. I like the honest reviews!

Really? The on-screen buttons take up like 1/4 inches of the screen, out of the 5.5 inch screen. That's kind of a...petty rant. Losing about 1/4" of the screen on a smaller screen like the S6 would be detrimental, though.

I've never known a phone that was perfect. In fact, I've never known anything that was perfect.

We tolerate none of that realistic outlook on life around here...its depressing. Perhaps I should go hang out on Apple related sites to make me believe perfect does exist XD

The on screen buttons are pretty much there when you need them and disappear when you don't. I've grown to be quite happy with them.

That being said, the phone is not going to tailor to every single person. You have to weigh the positives to the negatives, and if the negatives are something you can live with, then it's safe to say you found a device that will keep you happy. Yes, there are things that I don't like about the G4, but honestly there were things that I didn't like about every single phone I've ever owned. It's all about compromises.

If you're not happy with it, I'm sure there is another device out there that will suit you better. Trial and error. Unfortunately, carriers don't make test drives cheap.

It IS rather depressing, but Perfect must presumably exist somewhere, else we'd hardly have any concept of it. But not I think in manmade artefacts.

Edit: Note how, imperfectly, I neglected to quote your post to which this reply refers.

Can you tell us how you managed to hide the on screen navigation bar with Nova? I'm very interested on this and haven't found a way to do it. Thanks.

Regarding the design, I definitely think it looks premium. Between the leather back and the front with a subtle design I think the combo looks really classy. I agree with you about the flared corners, though.

Regarding the on screen buttons, I swear HTC has them too. I had the M8 for awhile and I know they had them. Did that change with the M9? I got the G4 coming from the Note 4 and I gotta say that I prefer the on screen buttons, especially LG's since you can change the configuration of them. I used my Note on battery saving mode and while in that mode the capacitive keys wouldn't light up, so many times I wouldn't hit the button just right. Plus with the lag in the recent apps button sometimes I couldn't tell if I had hit it, so I hit it again thinking it was just laggy, only for it to register two taps and close the recent app window, so I'd have to hit it yet again and wait for it to display! I admit that when I first got the G4 I spent a few seconds just tapping the recent apps button and marveling at its snappiness :).

I think it feels great in hand. Light and thin, I like the merge leather back and the grip it adds.
I'll probably be bummed when the "chromed" plastic scratches at some point down the road, but metal scratches too.

What color leather did you get?

Age old argument of on screen versus physical buttons. Having used samsung for the last couple of years I think I prefer physical but I dont mind on screen especially now many apps can hide the on screen buttons and the G4 has the option to hide them for chrome too.

Yes it does. The chamfered edges on my Note 4 got pretty scratched due to dust particles rubbing the metal while inside the case I was using.
