Try propping it up, on edge, and leave it for a while. If it still doesn't change orientation, the sensor used to sense the position of the phone is probably bad - or you turned screen rotation off in Settings.

There was nothing in the display section in Settings but up top on the home screen where I almost never look, there is an on/off setting for auto rotation. Of course it was switched off. Good to know nothing was broken. Thanks for your help!
